    • A solution process for the preparation of high molecular weight polymers of alpha-olefins selected from the group consisting of homopolymers of ethylene and copolymers of ethylene and C3-C12 higher alpha-olefins is disclosed. Ethylene and/or mixtures of ethylene and C3-C12 higher alpha-olefins are polymerized under non-isothermal conditions in a tubular reactor or in a system of reactors which operate under different conditions, in the presence of a catalytic amount of a titanium-containing coordination catalyst in an inert solvent at a temperature in excess of 105 DEG C. The improvement is characterized in that: (a) the catalyst is activated with a solution of a mixture of aluminum alkyl and alkoxy aluminum alkyl in inert solvent; and (b) the process is controlled by adjusting the ratio of aluminum alkyl to alkoxy aluminum alkyl in the mixture of (a). The aluminum alkyl is of the formula AlRnX3-n and the alkoxy aluminum alkyl is of the formula AlR'mOR''3-m, in which each of R, R' and R'' is alkyl or aryl of 1-20 carbon atoms, X is halogen, n is 2-3 and m is 0-3.

    • An improved piston for a pouch dispenser is disclosed. The dispenser is adapted to contain a pouch (52) of flowable material, and has lid (35) to keep the pouch within the dispenser and a piston which is adapted to move toward the lid and press against a first end (113) of the pouch, and push the flowable material out of the pouch through a hole in the second end of the pouch. The piston (47) has a peripheral lip (115) extending towards the second end of the pouch. The peripheral lip extends for a length sufficient to cause the film from which the pouch is made to pleat (116) in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the dispenser when the material in the pouch is squeezed from the pouch by the pressing action of the piston. The lid (35) and piston (47) are adapted to allow the peripheral lip to nest with the lid and to prevent the pleats from hindering essentially all of the material from being squeezed out of the pouch.

    • A selectively permeable membrane for the separation or enrichment of gaseous mixtures may be formed from amorphous polymers of perfluoro-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole, especially copolymers with a complementary amount of at least one of tetrafluoroethylene, perfluoromethyl vinyl ether, vinylidene fluoride and chlorotrifluoroethylene. Preferably, the polymer is a dipolymer containing 65-99 mole % of perfluoro-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole and having a glass transition temperature of at least 140 DEG C. The membranes may be used for the separation or enrichment of a wide variety of gaseous mixtures, including oxygen enrichment of air, and separation or enrichment of gaseous organic compounds in admixture with air, including separation or enrichment of the amount of fluorocarbon gases in air. The membranes exhibit a very high flux rate, compared with other glassy organic polymer membranes.

    • A solution process for the preparation of high molecular weight polymers of alpha-olefins selected from the group consisting of homopolymers of ethylene and copolymers of ethylene and C3-C12 higher alpha-olefins is disclosed. The process comprises feeding monomer selected from the group consisting of ethylene and mixtures of ethylene and at least one C3-C12 higher alpha-olefin, a coordination catalyst and inert hydrocarbon solvent to a reactor, polymerizing said monomer at a temperature in the range of 105-320 DEG C and recovering the polymer so obtained. The coordination catalyst is formed from MgR 2 and A1R 3 in which each R and R are the same or different and are alkyl groups having 1-10 carbon atoms; a reactive chloride component; a titanium compound selected from titanium tetrachloride, titanium tetrabromide and a compound of the formula Ti(OR)x in which x = 0-4 and R is an alkyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms; and an alcohol.
