    • A drill guide assembly for determining the axis for drilling a bore to receive a component of an orthopaedic joint prosthesis, includes a drill guide (14) having a sleeve (16) and a bulb (18) at one end of the sleeve (16). A frame (6), which can be fastened to the bone, includes a housing (22) which defines a recess (20) in which the drill guide bulb (18) can be received with the drill guide sleeve (16) extending out of the recess (20), in a direction away from the bone, so that the angular orientation of the drill guide sleeve (16) relative to the housing (22) can be adjusted by movement of the bulb (18) within the recess (20). The drill guide can be locked relative to the housing against angular adjustment by a clamp which comprises a lower pair of clamping surfaces provided by the drill guide bulb and the internal wall of the recess respectively, and an upper pair of clamping surfaces on the drill guide and the housing respectively.

    • An instrument for removing tissue from a bone to create a cavity consists of an approximately spherical body having cutting formations in its external surface for cutting a bone. The body has a connector by which it can be connected to a drive by which it can be rotated about an axis, and a recess at the pole, opposite the connector. When the instrument is applied to the surface of a bone and is rotated about its axis, bone is cut as a result of the action of the formations against the bone, and a circular region of bone adjacent to the polar recess in the body remains generally intact. The cutting formations are provided on the surface of the body over an area which extends from the recess beyond the equator of the body, so that the angle subtended at the centre of the body between (a) the polar axis and (b) a radius which connects the cutting formation which is furthest from the polar recess and the centre of the body is at least about 120°. The body can have cutting formations within the polar recess.

    • An instrument for use in orthopaedic surgery for location of a reference point relative to a bone surface comprises a plate member (30) having at least two holes (36, 38) in it towards one end for receiving fasteners which can pass through the holes into the bone to fasten the plate member to the bone. A pivot rocker (40) is provided between the said holes, which protrudes from the face of the plate member which faces the bone surface when the plate member is positioned against a bone, and a reference point (44) is provided towards the opposite end of the plate member form the fastening holes which is spaced from the fastening holes in a direction parallel to the line which intersects the holes. The distance between the reference point on the plate member and the surface of the bone can be adjusted by moving the fastener in one of the fastening holes into the bone and moving the fastener in the other of the fastening holes out of the bone.

    • An instrument for removing tissue from a bone to create a cavity which is approximately circular in outline in which tissue within a predetermined region within the circular outline is left relatively undisturbed. The instrument includes a rotational drive unit which oscillates through an angle α. A cutting head can be connected to the drive unit and thereby caused to rotate. The cutting head has an overall external shape provided by (a) a cutting area in which the external surface of the head bears cutting formations enabling the head to cut the bone tissue when applied to it and rotated, and (b) a recess area which leaves tissue which it contacts undisturbed. The shapes of the cutting and recess areas are such that a line can be drawn on the surface of the cutting head at a constant distance from the axis about which the head rotates, traversing both the cutting and recess areas.
