Apparatus for use in screw-cutting on lathes comprises a gear 1 engageable with the lathe lead screw A, a first dial 6 rotatable with the gear 1 whereby one rotation of the dial represents a first matching length of the lead screw and a second dial 8 connected to the gear 1 through a reduction gear transmission 2, 32, and 4 whereby one rotation of the second dial represents a second matching length of the lead screw which is greater than the first matching length. A matching length is defined as a length of the lead screw equal to the pitch of the leadscrew multiplied by the number of teeth in the gear. The dials are numbered, the numbers co-operating with respective datum points on the apron to facilitate the precise engagement of the lead screw not to ensure the accurate engagement of the cutting tool in the desired thread form.

A tool post turret for a lathe, in which cutting tools are selectively indexable into operative positions comprises a turret 10 and a support 14, connected by a coupling which comprises two ring members 16 and 18 secured to the turret and support respectively and having axially extending angularly spaced teeth 20 which are engageable to effect locating and clamping of the turret to its support, the teeth being truncated to allow clearance between root and crest positions when engaged, the co-operating engageable surfaces of the teeth being of sinusoidal form. The clamping and releasing of the turret from the support and hence disengagement of the coupling is effected by a handle 12 which threadably engages the tool post 24.

An English/metric indicator for the slide of a machine tool comprises a pinion 8 having two rows of teeth 6, 7 which mesh with internal teeth 5 and 11 respectively of two members 3 and 12 which are rotatable relative to each other, one member having metric graduations on its external periphery and the other member having English graduations on its external periphery. The rotation of member 3 by the handle 1 produces a proportional rotational movement of the member 12 depending on the number of teeth on the respective gears. Between the members 4 and 12 is a stationary member 13 on which is located a datum device. The pinion 8 is mounted on a stud 9 secured to the body 10 of the indicator. The numbers of teeth in the rows on the pinion may be equal or unequal in number.

A lathe or shaping machine comprises a saddle provided with a thrust bearing pad 2 to which hydraulic fluid is supplied at a pressure insufficient to raise the saddle out of contact with its guides. A pump 4 supplies high-pressure fluid to the pads 2 and low-pressure fluid to a distributer 8 for lubricating other parts of the lathe. A pump 4A extracts fluid from pockets 4B, too great a suction being prevented by a valve 4C. Gauges 6, 7 indicate the pressures. The pads may be on one or both sides of the saddle.
