    • Pneumatically controlled apparatus (10) serves jointly for automatically threading magnetic tape (16) along a transport path past a magnetic transducer head (26) external to a magnetic tape cassette (60), then transporting the tape along such path. Tape transport elements of the pneumatic-type-air-bearing guides (28a, 28b, 52, 54), a vacuum capstan (55a, 55b), etc. are arranged, like the magnetic head, on the oxide surface side (the information-bearing surface) of the magnetic tape. To thread the tape, a vacuum source (22) provides an air pressure gradient the effect of which is to draw tape, spanning a supply reel (18) and a take-up reel (20), from the cassette in the form of an expandable loop which takes the shape of the transport path when the tape loop expands into operative engagement with each transport element and the transducer head. The air-bearing guides (28a, 28b) are disposed immediately adjacent and tangential to opposing sides of the transducer head. The vacuum source, in cooperation with each air-bearing guide, provides the same air pressure gradient, used to thread the tape, to draw, and to thereby maintain, the tape adjacent the tape-guiding surface of each air-bearing guide during movement of the tape between the supply reel and the take-up reel.

    • A helical scan magnetic tape recorder has a magnetic tape threading and guiding system. Magnetic tape (26) contained in a cassette (20) is extracted from the cassette (20) and threaded around a magnetic tape path past a helical scan magnetic head assembly (14) by means of a pneumatic threading arrangement (74, 76, 78, 80). Tape threading is fast and gentle with no stress or edge damage to the tape. The threading arrangement has relatively few moving parts and is simple and reliable in design. After the tape is threaded into the tape transport, a plurality of tape guide elements (52, 54, 56, 58, 66, 70, 72, 80) mounted on a precision platform (100) are moved into position behind the magnetic tape (26). Thereafter, the pneumatic threading vacuum is terminated and the magnetic tape (26) is tensioned around the guide elements (52, 54, 56, 58, 66, 70, 72, 80) which establish a low constraint tape path about several stationary magnetic head assemblies (40, 42, 44) and a helical scan head assembly (14).

    • Magneto-optic transducer apparatus of a rotating form reads high-frequency information recorded on a magnetic tape (18) in other than a longitudinal format. To read information recorded in a slant track format, the transducer apparatus includes a first optical fiber (41) for scanning a polarized light beam (46) along a path adjacent the tape from one tape edge towards the other edge during the transporting of the tape. A magneto-optic element (55) is arranged in the path of the light beam adjacent the tape, to modulate the light according to magnetization of the region of the tape adjacent the magneto-optic element as the light beam is scanned across the tape. A second optical fiber (42), optically coupled to the element (55), directs the modulated light to impinge on light-responsive apparatus (52, 58), which is arranged to produce an electrical signal that is functionnally related to the modulation of the light.
