    • A prefabricated vehicle window having an exterior molding is prepared by (a) placing a protective film inside a glass support fixture having a cavity to line the cavity; (b) depositing a bead of a first hardenable polymeric material (first bead) on top of the protective film in an amount sufficient to fully cover the marginal edges of the outer surface of a glass sheet subsequently placed on the glass support fixture; (c) placing a glass sheet having exposed side surfaces, inner surface and outer surface on the glass support fixture, with the outer surface facing toward the glass support fixture, and at least a portion of its periphery pressing against the first bead which causes the first bead to conform to the shape and contour of the film-covered glass support fixture cavity and cover the adjacent exposed marginal edges of the outer glass surface, and squeezes out any excess first bead over to the exposed side surfaces, thereby partially or fully covering the exposed side surfaces; and (d) depositing a bead of a second hardenable polymeric material (second bead) in the glass support fixture in an amount sufficient to cover the marginal edges of the glass inner surface, and the glass side surfaces.

    • The invention is a process for preparing a prefabricated vehicle window comprising the sequential steps of:(a) placing a cover film in a receptacle to provide a film cavity, with a portion of the cover film extending out of the receptacle, wherein the cavity is of a dimension sufficient to hold a bead of adhesive which would extend around the entire periphery of the window;(b) depositing a bead of an uncured, deformable adhesive in the cavity on top of the cover film in an amount sufficient to slightly overfill the cavity; and(c) contacting the bead of adhesive with a vehicle window under conditions sufficient to press adhesive out of the cavity and between the vehicle window and the portion of the cover film extending over the sides of the receptacle such that the adhesive pressed out of the cavity bonds the film to the window along the edges of the bead of adhesive.

    • A bonding strip for mounting a window glass on a vehicle body panel flange is extruded from a resilient adhesive butyl rubber compound and includes a body portion which defines a recess for receiving the edge of the window glass and an underface which faces toward the body panel flange. The bonding strip also has a leg which is integral with the body portion and extends from one edge of the underface at an acute angle toward the other edge of the underface. A bead of highly viscous pumpable liquid butyl rubber is applied along the body panel flange. When the glass is installed against the body panel flange, the leg of the bonding strip is engaged against the bead of highly viscous liquid butyl and causes the bead of liquid butyl to flow to fill any spaces resulting from surface uneveness of the body panel flange. The weight of the window glass causes the leg of the bonding strip to be folded back into engagement with the underface of the body portion whereby one face of the leg is adhered to the underface of the body portion and the other face of the leg is adhered to the body panel flange by the liquid butyl rubber when it is cured.

    • A decorative molding for concealing the space between the edge of a window panel and an inwardly offset body panel flange structure having an inwardly extending wall and a wall extending parallel to the body panel. The decorative molding is comprised of a generally rectangular thin-wall tubular member of extruded plastic including laterally spaced inner and outer side walls and top and bottom walls. A pair of legs extend laterally from the inner side wall to form a channel adapted for engagement with the edge of the window panel. The outer side wall is generally planar for contact with the inwardly extending wall and has an end projection which spaces the bottom wall somewhat above the parallel extending wall. The bottom wall of the molding has an inverted V-shaped cross section so that the bottom wall flexes to provide a biasing force urging the outer side wall against the inwardly extending wall of the body panel flange and urging the inner side wall of the molding to capture the edge of the window panel in a channel formed by the laterally extending leg so that the width of the molding is varied to accommodate variation in the width of the space between the window panel and the flanged structure. The top wall of the molding has a width which does not substantially exceed the spacing between the edge of the window panel and the inwardly extending wall of the body panel flange to provide a narrow decorative appearance and also facilitate bending of the molding around the corners of the window panel.

    • An improved modular window assembly includes a window glass and peripheral frame having a plurality of threaded attached studs spaced therealong extending through matching grommet lined holes spaced inwardly from the peripheral edge of the glass. The frictional engagement of the threaded studs with the grommets serves to retain the glass and frame together as a separately handled unit with no necessity of an injection molded gasket. The window unit may be attached to the pinchweld of a vehicle window opening by dropping the studs through matching holes and threading fasteners to the studs to draw down the window frame. This serves to compress the grommets further to seal the holes through the window glass. A bead of sealant or adhesive may be used in conjunction with the window assembly if desired, and the inwardly spacing of the studs creates an unobstructed space therefor.

    • The free end of an arm rotatable with one hinge member contains a roller receiving cavity which opens to an arcuate friction layer on the other hinge member which is disposed about the axis of relative rotation of the hinge members. A spring biased double faced wedging member is movable into and out of the center of the cavity and each face of the member is respective to a semi-cylindrical roller retention surface of the cavity. One face is more steeply sloped than the other. When the hinge members are in door closed position the less steeply sloped face resiliently holds a cylindrical roller against a roller retention surface and the friction layer. As the hinge members rotate toward door open position, the cylindrical roller rotates along the friction layer, past the less steeply sloped face, and into rolling contact with the other retention surface and friction layer under the bias of the more steeply sloped face. When the hinge members move to the desired door open position, a slight reversal thereof causes the more steeply sloped face to force the roller into the friction layer and roller retention surface to provide a hold-open.
