摘要： An apparatus and method for use in performing ablation or coagulation of organs and other tissue includes a metallized fabric electrode array which is substantially absorbent and/or permeable to moisture and gases such as steam and conformable to the body cavity. The array includes conductive regions separated by insulated regions arranged to produce ablation to a predetermined depth. Following placement of the ablation device into contact with the tissue to be ablated, an RF generator is used to deliver RF energy to the conductive regions and to thereby induce current flow from the electrodes to tissue to be ablated. As the current heats the tissue, moisture (such as steam or liquid) leaves the tissue causing the tissue to dehydrate. Suction may be applied to facilitate moisture removal. The moisture permeability and/or absorbency of the electrode carrying member allows the moisture to leave the ablation site so as to prevent the moisture from providing a path of conductivity for the current.

Under normal operating conditions, the uterine sound is in the closed position for insertion into a uterus to measure the length of the uterus. Under conditions where there is a risk of the uterine sound perforating a uterine wall, the uterine sound switches into an open position. The open position provides an enlarged surface area of a distal end of the uterine sound that is in contact with a uterine wall and resists perforation by the uterine sound of the uterine wall.

A second elongate member is provided having a distal end and a proximal end, the second elongate member configured to move within the lumen of the first elongate member, where the distal end can protrude from the distal end of the first elongate member and is configured for insertion to approximately the fundus of a uterine cavity. Moving the second elongate member relative to the first elongate member to position the distal end of the second elongate member at approximately the fundus of the uterus provides a direct measurement of a length of the uterine cavity.
