    • An apparatus and method for forming a contact lens mould half for use in manufacturing a contact lens comprises an injection moulding unit including first and second plates (110 fig 4, 210 fig 7) each carrying tool halves (120 fig 4, 220 fig 7). The plates reciprocate between an open, spaced apart configuration, and a closed configuration in which they hold complementary tool halves in contact with one another to define an injection moulding cavity. A gripper plate 400 is arranged to move between a receive position to remove the contact lens mould halves from the plates using mould-removing elements 470 when the plates are in an open configuration; and a deliver position. A linear motor 520 is arranged to propel the gripper plate. Preferably, the mould removing elements include a vacuum inlet configured to apply a vacuum to the formed contact lens mould half and remove it from a tool half. A take-off robot including a pick head having vacuum inlets may be arranged to receive mould halves from the gripper plate when in the deliver position and to transfer them to a transporter.
