    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of quickly and effectively searching an unused band for a cognitive communication terminal. SOLUTION: The searching method of the unused band employs the cognitive communication terminal which functions within an area covered by a communication system of a first generation using a number of frequency bands B. The terminal classifies the bands as functions of usable conditional probability (p(b max ¾B occ , B opp )). The terminal starts its searching by the band having the most large conditional probability (b max ) after knowing a first aggregation of a band which is exclusively possessed by a communication system (B occ ) of the first generation and a second aggregation of a band which is not exclusively possessed by a communication system of the first generation though being already used by the other cognitive terminal (B opp ).     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of determining frequency bands available for a cognitive radio terminal.
      SOLUTION: A cognitive telecommunication terminal 300 is designed to coexist with a primary telecommunication system using a set (B) of transmission frequencies. The system includes a plurality of spatially distributed transmitters, each transmitter being suitable for transmitting within a coverage area in a plurality of frequency bands in the set allocated to the transmitter. The terminal includes: positioning means 310; a database 320 for storing information defining the coverage area for each transmitter; a calculation means 330 suitable for determining the maximum power that the terminal can transmit for each frequency band in the set, and for sorting frequency bands as a function of the maximum powers this obtained; and a transmission/reception means 340 suitable for detecting the presence of a signal in the frequency bands thus sorted, so as to begin with the frequency band associated with the highest maximum power.
