    • A method and apparatus is provided for synchronizing a spread spectrum communication site. The communication site receives a spread message signal from over a radio communication channel. Subsequently, the communication site synchronizes the received spread message signal with an estimate of the received spread message signal. The estimated received signal is a function of a predetermined message signal and a predetermined spreading code. The received and the estimated received spread message signals are synchronized by using a sliding correlator to incrementally increase the phase shift between the received and the estimated received spread message signal until the received and the estimated received spread message signals are synchronized. The communication site limits the increase of the phase shift between the received and the estimated received spread message signal to a predetermined maximum phase shift magnitude which is derived from known operating environment parameters of the spread spectrum communication site.

    • A radio frequency communication system is coupled to a telephone network (130) having automatic number identification (ANI) capabilities for communication thereover. The radio frequency communication system includes at least one relocateable base station (115) which shares a radio frequency channel with stationary communication devices (105) for communicating over predetermined geographic areas (110). The radio frequency communication system further includes a service center (125) which, in response to a call from a base station (115), receives from the telephone network (130) information indicative of at least a portion of a telephone number from which the base station (115) is calling. The service center (125) determines therefrom whether the base station (115) is located within any of the predetermined geographic areas (110). When the base station (115) is not located within any of the predetermined geographic areas (110), the service center (125) transmits an authorization signal over the telephone network (130) indicating that the base station (115) is authorized for radio frequency communication over the shared radio frequency channel.

    • A carrier module such as a chip carrier or a circuit board has a matrix of programmable connection pads for attaching a VHDLSI chip. Each pad is encircled by circuit elements (lines or vias) providing different power or signals and one of the lines or vias is selectively connected to the pad to program the connection. The pads have cut outs at the connection points to the vias and/or lines in order to simplify making of connections. The programming connections between the vias and/or lines and the pads are made after pre-finishing the board by depositing evaporated metal to form a bridge between each pad and a via or line selected for each pad. Then a passivation layer of polyimide is deposited on the vias and/or lines with an aperture at the center of each pads so that solder connections to attach the chip to the carrier module do not erroneously bridge to additional vias and/or lines.
