    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewage treatment material which has a large specific surface area, and a large capacity carrying microorganisms, is firm and hardly worn out, and can be easily and efficiently obtained in a constant shape. SOLUTION: The sewage treatment material mainly comprises calcium carbonate and amorphous silica (and, more desirably, sulfur). The calcium carbonate and amorphous silica are generated by carbonation of calcium silicate. The sewage treatment material has a number of pores, and pores of ≤10 nm amount to ≥10% of the total pores. The specific surface area is ≥30 m 2 /g. The sewage treatment material is produced by molding a powdery granular material of calcium silicate (and, more desirably, a powdery granular material of sulfur), and curing the obtained molding under an atmosphere of carbon dioxide gas.
