    • A data storage subsystem employs managed files, each comprising one or an aggregation of multiple individual, constituent user files, to reduce file management overhead costs. After receiving user files from a client station, the subsystem creates a contiguous managed file by aggregating selected ones of the received user files according to certain predetermined criteria. Managed file creation and use are transparent to the client stations. To aid in file management, the subsystem provides a mapping table that lists, for each user file, a corresponding location of that user file within a managed file. With this hardware and table structure, the system conducts file management with reduced overhead. For example, internal data management operations include an improved copy operation where a managed file is copied as a contiguous unit between first and second locations in the data storage subsystem. In addition to internal data management operations, the subsystem satisfies client output requests, including retrieve operations initiated when the subsystem receives a retrieval request and identified user file from a client station. In response, the subsystem employs the mapping table to find the identified user file's location in the managed file. Referencing the identified user file's location in the managed file enables the subsystem to obtain a copy of the identified user file, which is ultimately provided to the requesting client station.

    • In a multiprocessing system, hierarchically superior configuration managers maintain profiles of operating characteristics to which subordinate managed units selectively subscribe. If the profiles or operating characteristics change, the configuration managers propagate the changes to all managed units. Each configuration manager stores a record of operating characteristics and multiple server profiles, each profile specifying one or more operating characteristics. A subscription list identifies one or more managed units, each associated with one or more server profiles. Each managed unit acts according to its current operating characteristics, stored locally at the managed unit. If the managed unit receives a profile subscription request from a system administrator, the managed unit sends a subscription message to the configuration manager to subscribe to that input profile. Receiving the subscription, the configuration manager enters the subscribing managed unit and the associated profile into the subscription list, and returns the profiled operating characteristics to the subscribing managed unit. The subscribing managed unit stores these operating characteristics in its record of current operating characteristics. If there is a change to the operating characteristics (or to the profiles), the configuration manager transmits the changed matter to all managed units with affected subscriptions. Upon receipt of this data, each subscribing managed units stores the changed operating characteristics in its record of current operating characteristics.

    • Disclosed is a server having a plurality of clients coupled to the server at client nodes, and coupled to a plurality of receivers. Events, which may range from a successful completion message to a major error alert, may be generated relating to the server or to the client nodes. A method is disclosed for dynamically selectively distributing the events to particular ones of the receivers, in response to a selective enabling/disabling of the events to each receiver. The method with respect to client nodes comprises: upon opening a session of a client node, the selectively enabled events/receivers relating to the client node are determined. Upon the selective enabling/disabling occurring during the session of the client node, the determined selectively enabled events/receivers relating to the client node are dynamically updated. Then, upon occurrence of an event relating to a client node, the event is distributed to ones of the receivers having been selectively enabled for the event in the determining and the dynamically updating steps. Additionally, classes of events or wild card groups of client nodes may be enabled.
