    • A liquid crystal display device (100) includes an upper substrate (12), a lower substrate (11), and a liquid crystal layer (130) between the upper substrate and the lower substrate. The upper substrate includes an upper polarizer (143) and a color filter layer (127), the upper polarizer being an extraordinary type polarizer. The lower substrate includes a reflective film (119). A multiplicity of pixel electrodes (113) and common electrodes (111) are positioned at the lower substrate, for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal layer. The display device has a wide viewing angle, can work at high temperatures, and is relatively thin and compact. Further, the color filter layer is positioned above the upper polarizer. Optical beams reach the color filter layer after passing back through the liquid crystal layer and the upper polarizer. This reduces or eliminates color filter de-polarizing, and yields a high contrast ratio over wide viewing angles.

    • A reflective type IPS LCD includes a transparent upper substrate (100) and a lower substrate (200), and liquid crystal molecules (300) interposed between the substrates. A reflection layer (250) is disposed on the lower substrate. A plurality of gate lines (170) and a plurality of data lines (180) are formed on the upper substrate, thereby defining a plurality of pixel regions arranged in a matrix. Each pixel region includes pixel electrodes (210) and common electrodes (220). The pixel electrodes and the common electrodes have a bent configuration, and are spaced apart from each other. Therefore the electric field generated by them is along two directions, and the LCD exhibits a two-domain display effect. When viewing the LCD display from any oblique angle, the color shifts generated by the two domains counteract, and thus the overall color shift of the display is small.

    • A transflective liquid crystal display (2) includes a transparent upper substrate (100), a lower substrate (200) opposite to the upper substrate, a liquid crystal layer (300) sandwiched between the two substrates, gate lines (170) and data lines (180) defining pixel units arranged in a matrix, pixel electrodes (210) and common electrodes (220) associated with one of the substrates to each pixel unit of one of the substrates, a transflective layer (250) formed at one side of one of the substrates. The pixel electrodes and the common electrodes have the same bent form, are disposed alternately, and are substantially parallel to each other. When a voltage is applied on the electrodes, an electric field in two directions is generated. Liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer are oriented in two directions in accordance with the electric field. Therefore, color shift is reduced.

    • An in plane switching liquid crystal display (2) includes a first substrate (220) and a second substrate (210) disposed opposite each other and spaced apart a predetermined distance. A liquid crystal layer is interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, the liquid crystal layer containing a plurality of liquid crystal molecules (230). A plurality of pixel electrodes (213) and a plurality of counter electrodes (211) are formed on the first substrate in parallel alternating fashion. Two polarizers (240, 241) are disposed on the first substrate and the second substrate, respectively. A transflector (217) capable of transmitting and reflecting light beams is disposed on the first substrate. The in plane switching liquid crystal display can thus utilize ambient light beams as well as light beams provided by a backlight, so that the in plane switching liquid crystal display has low power consumption.
