    • A transfer mechanism for a magnetographic recording apparatus employs a pair of imaging/printing drums arranged for pivotal translation past one another so as to be controllably positionable at a respective one of imaging and printing stations. At the imaging station a latent image of the desired graphics/text to be reproduced is written onto a first drum while, at the same time, at the printing station, a latent image that was previously written at the imaging station onto a second drum is employed for hard copy reproduction. The transfer mechanism preferably comprises a set of rotatably driven and meshed gear wheels about the respective axes of which pivot of a pair of support arms upon which the imaging/printing drums are mounted. The support arms for a first of the drums are mounted for rotation with a first of the gear wheels about the axis of the first wheel, while the support arms for the second of the drums are mounted for rotation with a second of the gear wheels that mesh with the first wheel about the axis of the second of the gear wheels.

    • A printing unit in a lithographic web fed rotary printing press has a plate cylinder and an associated blanket cylinder mechanically coupled via a gear train. A first drive motor drives both the plate cylinder and blanket cylinder. An impression cylinder is associated with the blanket cylinder, the impression cylinder being in rolling contact with the blanket cylinder and being driven by a second drive motor. The web passes through a nip formed between the impression cylinder and the blanket cylinder for printing. A clutch is provided for interrupting a drive connection between the first drive motor and the blanket cylinder, as is a throw-off mechanism for separating the plate cylinder from the blanket cylinder. With the printing unit, the blanket cylinder can remain in rolling contact with the impression cylinder and be friction-driven by the web after the drive connection has been interrupted.

Data is entered into a computer memory representing the number of sections of a publication to be printed, the number of pages for each section and which pages of each section are to be printed in one or more colored inks. An acceptable web layout pattern and acceptable page printing plate locations on the various plate cylinders of the press are determined from the inputted and previously stored data. A readout is presented providing information as to the acceptable web layout pattern and the correct page printing plate positions.

    • A device for transporting flat products to further processing units is provided which includes a track 4 forming a continuous loop, a plurality of gripper elements 1 and a driving module 99. The gripper elements 1 are arranged on the track 4, and include a gripper 2 for seizing a flat product 11 from a first device and releasing the flat product to a second device 13. Each gripper element 1 moves independently from each other gripper element 1 along at least a portion of the track 4. Each gripper element is selectively engaged by the driving module 99 for movement along the track. The driving module 99 may include, for example, a drive unit 9 for driving the gripper elements in a side-by-side configuration without pitch; an extended pitch driving unit 7 for driving the gripper elements at a defined pitch; an acceleration unit 6 for accelerating the gripper elements to the defined pitch; and/or a diverting unit 32 for diverting selected gripper elements to an alternate track.

    • The present invention relates to a device for removing ink, water and contamination build-up on an ink roller in a printing press. The present invention also relates to a device for scavenging unused ink from an ink roller in a printing press, to allow the return the unused ink to the ink fountain. One embodiment of the invention includes a movable scraper blade having a gap corresponding to the lithographic or printing area of the ink roller. In this embodiment, the blade scrapes ink and/or water off of the ink roller only in the areas adjacent the lithographic or printing area. In another embodiment, a scraper blade is constructed of a series of blade segments, with each blade segment being independently actuatable through an actuator. This embodiment allows the scraping area or areas to be adjusted by simply controlling the appropriate actuators for the blade segments corresponding to the scraping area. The scraped ink can be sent directly back into the ink fountain, can be purified before being directed to the ink fountain, or can be disposed.
