    • A method of implementing an electronic calculator function in a portable terminal having a display comprises the steps of: setting an electronic calculator mode; displaying separately on the display: a first input window which receives and displays therein numeric information subject to arithmetic operation, a second input window which receives and displays therein operation/control commands, and an output window which displays therein an information input state and a result of the operation; displaying the numeric information in the output window when the corresponding information is inputted through the first input window; performing an operation on the numeric information displayed in the output window when the operation/control commands are inputted through the second input window; and displaying resultant numeric information, resulting from the operation, in the output window. The size of the output window may be increase as needed by reducing the sizes of the first and second input windows.

    • A cylindrical astigmatic lens is used conventionally in detecting focussing errors in an optical pickup system. The inventive astigmatic lens is comprised of an orthorhombic base, made of a refractive material, provided with two parallel surfaces and a centerplane perpendicular thereto, and two sets of M pentahedrons, made of the same refractive material, placed on one of the two parallel surfaces thereof in such a way that each set of M pentahedrons is symmetric with respect to the centerplane. Each of the pentahedrons consists of three rectangular surfaces and two right angled triangular side surfaces, each of the triangular side surfaces being defined by a height H.sub.m, a base R.sub.m and an inclination. Since the height is the same in all of the triangular side surfaces in the M pentahedrons, the dimension of each pentahedron in the inventive astigmatic lens is defined by R.sub.m, R.sub.m being expressed as ##EQU1## wherein f represents the focus length and .lambda. is the wavelength of the light source with the inventive astigmatic lens, it is possible to improve the alignment accuracy of the optical pickup system, since the inventive astigmatic lens being planar.

    • The optical pick-up system utilizing a knife edge method for a determining focusing error includes a light source, an optical detection unit, a beam splitter, an object lens, a knife edge, a pair of adders and a differential amplifier, wherein the optical detection unit further is provided with a first detector and a second detector, each of the first and the second detectors being equally divided to provide a pair of first and second photoelectric cells. The system is different from an optical pickup system utilizing a conventional knife edge method in that: (1) the detectors are perpendicular to each other; (2) the knife edge reflects a portion of the light beam transmitted by the beam splitter; (3) optical detection unit further includes a first adder and a second adder, each of the adders being used for summing outputs from the first and the second photoelectric cells; and the differential amplifier is used for receiving the outputs of the adders and generating a difference between the outputs from the adders as a focusing error signal.
