A cable stitch pattern is produced on a straight-bar knitting machine by picking up the stitches Lb from a centre group of needles 2c and the stitches Lc from needles 2b at one side of the centre group and then placing the stitches Lb on the needles 2c and the stitches Lc on the needles 2b, knitting a plurality of courses, e.g. eight, of plain fabric and then repeating the above procedure with the centre group of needles and a group of needles 2f on the opposite side of the centre. As shown, in addition to loop transfer instruments 1b 1c on transfer fingers 42, 43 forming cable box 38 as described in Specification 930,068, an additional group of loop transfer instruments 1d is provided on a transfer finger 156 mounted on a part 3x attached to box 38. Drop stitch points 47p, 48p as described in Specification 994,521 are provided outside transfer fingers 43, 156. Intermediate bar 42 is spring-biased downwardly to engage stop 160 on box 38. When either bar 43 or bar 156 is raised, a corresponding projection 157 on box 38 is moved out of engagement with a recess 158 in the bar which is then displaced so that its instruments can co-operate with the needles. Fingers 43 and 156 are operated by rods 59, 162 connected respectively by arms 134, 165 to links 161, 166 connected to members 168, 169. Blocks 170, 171 on members 168, 169 have cupshaped ends 170a, 171a in a plane parallel to the plane containing pegs 172, 173 carried on arms 174 of bell crank levers 175. Levers 175 are operated by cam-operated mechanisms 176a when selected by pattern means comprising a disc 177 having pattern bits 178, 179 which engage pawls connected through linkages with members 168, 169.
