摘要： A down-draw glass making apparatus (10), for providing a clean glass-making environment, including an enclosure (12), a forming body (30) disposed within the enclosure, an inlet pipe (36) disposed so as to deliver molten glass to the forming body, and a conduit (40) having an outlet disposed so as to deliver fluid to the enclosure whereby the enclosure may be pressurized. The conduit is made of a material that itself does not generate particles causing onclusion formation, and is located at the same elevation as the forming body The enclosure may be a muffle chamber that includes a muffle door (20) at a bottom thereof and through which there exits glass formed by the forming body, wherein the outlet of the conduit is located within the muffle chamber and outside the muffle door. There may also be included a source of gas (44) connected to the conduit, wherein the source of gas is configured to deliver gas of an airborne particulate cleanliness class 100 or cleaner.

摘要： A method of reducing distortion in a glass sheet is described and comprises the steps of: forming a glass ribbon in a glass manufacturing process; separating a glass sheet from the glass ribbon, the glass sheet having a substantially flat surface; measuring a retardation through the surface of the glass sheet; defining a retardation parameter indicative of the retardation of the glass sheet; cutting the glass sheet into a plurality of sub-sheets; measuring a distortion of the sub-sheets; defining a distortion parameter indicative of the distortion of the sub-sheets; and determining a correlation between the retardation parameter and the distortion parameter such that the distortion parameter of sub-sheets of a subsequent glass sheet can be predicted based on the correlation.

摘要： Disclosed is an apparatus for producing a glass sheet comprising lower thermal shields positioned below cooling doors for minimizing radiative heat loss from a forming body used to form a ribbon of molten glass from which a glass sheet is cut, and upper thermal shields positioned between the cooling doors and a root of the forming body for minimizing radiative heat loss from the forming body. The thermal shields are typically arranged as pairs and positioned on horizontally opposite sides of a flow of molten glass descending as a continuous ribbon from the forming body. Each thermal shield of the lower and upper thermal shield pairs may comprise a plurality of segments, including end segments and a central segment, wherein the end segments may be separately movable relative to the central segment, allowing an edge of the thermal shield adjacent the ribbon to be varied.

The glass is processable by (i) flowing the glass in a molten state over forming surfaces to form a glass ribbon, the forming surfaces converging at a root and (ii) drawing the glass ribbon using pulling rollers to form a glass sheet, wherein the pulling rollers are spaced at a pulling roller distance from the root, and wherein the glass exhibits a viscosity curve slope obtained by plotting a temperature gradient to increase a root viscosity of the glass at the root, to a higher viscosity at one of several positions between the root and the pulling rollers, and a viscosity of the glass at the pulling rollers. The glass comprises a liquidus viscosity, the root viscosity being less than the liquidus viscosity, and the glass comprising a viscosity curve slope that prevents a baggy warp defect. In certain embodiments, when the root viscosity of the glass is in a range of from about 70 kP to about 90 kP, and the viscosity of the glass at the pulling rollers is greater than 90 kP and less than or equal 1 X 10 8 kP, the temperature gradient is less than 150 °C.
