Apparatus for contacting a liquid with a gas or vapour or two immiscible liquids of different density with each other comprises a series of trays 2 arranged within a column and having openings which open tangentially to the upper surfaces of the trays, the depth of each tray increasing continuously from the perimeter towards the centre. As shown, the trays are conical and the openings horizontal and of circular cross-section with a diameter between 0.5 and 10 mm., the total cross-section of the openings being between 1 and 25%, preferably between 3 and 15%, of the cross-sectional area of the column. Alternatively when a liquid is being contacted with gas or vapour the ratio of the total cross-sectional area of the openings to the cross-sectional area of the column may be increased to between 50 and 100%. The tray surface is preferably inclined to the vertical axis of the column at an angle between 30 and 80 degrees. Conical trays may be made by joining together a number of sector-like sections of sheet-metal which are formed with H-sectioned slits, the tongues between the two parallel slits being bent in opposite directions to form the tangential openings required. As shown in Fig. 3, the trays 2 are arranged in pairs, the dense fluid flowing to a tray below alternately through passages 4 and a central pipe 5.
