    • 17,171. Rivett, E., and Hunt, D. July 20. Lathes.-Lathes for making balls are constructed with a hollow spindle B fitted with a chuck e for holding the rod, which is advanced intermittently the required distance, and operated upon by a disc cutter c with a nearly - semicircular cutting-edge. The cutter is clamped in standards c on a disc c having a spindle c mounted in the slide a, which is moved to and from the axis of the spindle B by any suitable means, preferably by a cam b acting, against the action of a spring, on a pivoted lever, the upper end of which engages a recess in a stud adjustably fixed in the slide a. The cutter is mounted so that the centre of its cutting-edge is over the axis of the spindle c and the outer edge of the cutter projects further than the inner edge, the ball being severed from the rod by oscillating the spindle c and the cutter at the required time by the lever c and cam c . To reset the cutter accurately after grinding, a cylindrical gauge d, mounted in the centre of the spindle c, is employed, turned to the same diameter as the ball required. The gauge d can be raised by a hand-lever and the edge of the cutter set flush with the upper edge of the gauge at the proper height. The split chuck e is secured to a sleeve e carrying a disc e at its outer end, and the sleeve e' is operated for closing or allowing the jaws of the chuck to open by a coned slide f moved on the spindle B by a cam f and lever f and acting on levers e pivoted to the disc e . The ends e of the levers e abut against the end of the spindle B and also enter slots in the spindle B so that the sleeve e is always rotated with the spindle. The rod is s passed through a tube or carrier g supported loosely in a block g , and has a threaded portion g , engaging a nut g secured in the sleeve e', a collar g on the tube being normally held against the nut g by a spring n, the other end of which is fixed to the block g'. When the rod is required to be fed forward, the split end of the tube g is closed on the rod by the clamping-levers h, h , one of which is actuated by the cam h'. The tube g is thus held stationary and is caused to advance by the rotating nut g . The motion of the levers h, h and the amount of the feed are limited by the stops o , o . The levers h, h are returned by the spring o attached to the rod h, and the tube g is returned by the coiled spring n.
