    • A lossy codec, in particular an encoder or decoder compliant with HEVC, has tools (functions or capabilities) which are not useful for lossless compression. Surprisingly, these existing tools in the HEVC specifications do not bring any coding efficiency gain when dealing with lossless compression. These tools (functions or capabilities) can then either be omitted entirely from the encoder or decoder or, alternatively, they can be inhibited in the lossless mode but available when lossy compression is to be performed. The proposed modifications can alternatively be applied for the coding of screen content sequences, both for the lossless and the lossy cases, due to their particular properties.

    • The present invention is related to video coding and decoding, in particular HEVC SCC that define a palette coding mode. In conventional palette modes, the block of levels built from the Coding Unit and from the palette is encoded using syntax elements, such as the "Pred mode" element, the optional "Level" element and the "Run" element defining the number of successive indexes of the block of indexes that are concerned by an operation defined by the "Pred mode" element and the optional "Level" element.     • The invention concerns a method and a device for processing images, e.g. for encoding or decoding the images into or from a bitstream, using a palette prediction mode as defined in HEVC SCC. The images are split into hierarchical coding structures. At the decoder, the method comprises: decoding encoded data of two self-contained coding structures having the same hierarchical level, using a palette coding mode which uses, for each processed block of the two coding structures, an associated palette that comprises entries associating respective entry indexes with corresponding pixel values, wherein the palette associated with each processed pixel block is predicted from a palette predictor using prediction information from the bitstream;obtaining, from the bitstream, a palette predictor initializer associated with a coding structure hierarchically above the two self-contained coding structures; and initializing the palette predictor for each self-contained coding structure using the same obtained palette predictor initializer.

    • The invention concerns a method and a device for processing a current pixel block of an image using a palette prediction mode according to HEVC RExt. The mode uses a current palette to build a predictor block of indexes to predict the current pixel block. The current palette comprises entries associating entry indexes with pixel values. The method comprises predicting the current palette from entries of two or more palettes that are palettes previously used to process blocks of pixels. A palette predictor may be used that is built from the two or more palettes, preferably from the last used palette for a coding unit in the current coding entity and from the previously used palette for which a flag bitmap indicates whether or not its elements have been copied into the last used palette. Accordingly, the coding of the palette mode is improved.
