A feed table comprises an endless belt extending longitudinally of the table at a small angle to a side-lay plate, and means to vary the angle. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a table formed of side frames 10a, 10b and transverse bars 10c; this stationary structure supports a carriage 11 transversely movable on bar 16 and which can be clamped in position by screw 17, further fine adjustment being possible by means of knob 20 which interacts with a threaded end of bar 16 to move it, and the carriage, bodily. Sheets are conveyed by endless belt 32, see also Fig 4, whose position is adjustable with respect to side-lay plate 38, so that the edges of sheets are aligned against plate 38. Sheets are held in contact with belt 32 by means of steel balls (54), (Fig. 3, not shown) in blocks 46 carried on a bar 45, adjustable with the belt 32, supported by transverse bearers 52, 53; these bearers also support sheet-smoothing strips 48 disposed above a plurality of support strips 47 which are, fixed to the table in the same plane as the upper rim of belt 32 so that sheets pass between the units 47, 48 during conveying. Adjustment of belt.-Fig. 4 illustrates a support bar 21 disposed between the side limbs 12 of carriage 11 in bearing brackets 22, (25), (Fig. 6, not shown), carrying horizontal spindles (23), (Fig. 5, not shown), 26 for pulleys 24, 27 around which the belt 32 is trained. The bearing bracket 22 is pivoted to the end bracket 13, Fig. 1, of the carriage by means of a vertical pivot pin (28), (Fig. 6, not shown), and can be secured at any desired angle of inclination to the sheet-feed direction X, the entire belt 32 and bearings being thus pivoted. The belt is driven from shaft 33 by means of chain 34, shaft 35 and a flexible coupling 37 to the pulley 24. Side-lay plate 38 can also be pivoted about pin 39 by screw 40 and the plate is provided with a groove of V-section which is horizontal and coincident with the conveying plane so that the edge of belt 32 runs in the groove, and sheets are engaged by the latter as they are forwarded and simultaneously aligned.

    • 1,219,409. Folding paper. CAMCO (MACHINERY) Ltd. 9 May, 1968 [12 May, 1967], No. 22227/67. Heading B8R. A paper sheet folding machine comprises a plurality of separate fold sections for effecting a plurality of folds in directions lying at right angles to one another, a final fold section in the form of a separate and removable unit being arranged to be usable in any one of at least two alternative positions on the machine to which each partially folded sheet can be directed from a previous fold section of the machine. (1) A sheet is fed on a conveyer 14, Figs. 7 and 8, to a buckling folder 19, 20, 20a, which folds it transversely. A plurality of buckling folders are provided if a plurality of transverse folds are required. (2) The folded sheet is fed on a conveyer 22 to below a reciprocating knife folder 28 movable downwards by a pneumatic or hydraulic mechanism 32 and co-operating with rollers 29 to fold it again along a line parallel to frame side plates 10, 11. (3) The twice-folded sheet is fed by a conveyer 34 to one of the folders F3a or F3b, each of which comprises a reciprocating knife 42 or 44 operated by a pneumatic or hydraulic mechanism 43 or 45 and co-operating with common rollers 46 to fold it along a line transverse to the plates 10, 11. (4) A fourth folder F4, Figs. 7, 8, 9, is in the form of a detachable unit with extensions 58, 63 which pass through one of four apertures such as 48, 49 of which there are two in each side plate 10, 11. If the folder F3a is in use, one of the apertures in the plate 10 is used, according to which direction the sheet is to be fed for receiving the fourth fold. As shown, the folder F4 is in the aperture 48 and the sheet is first fed parallel to the plate 10 against a side lay 72 and then transverse to the plate 10 to come below a reciprocating knife 55 operated by an hydraulic or pneumatic mechanism 56 and cooperating with rollers 57 to fold it along a line parallel to the plate 10. The sheet is then removed by a conveyer 80 in a form comprising 32 pages. The knife folders are actuated when a photo-electric device senses the arrival of a sheet. The insertion of the folder F4 may control the drive to the reversible conveyer 40. According to the position of the folder F4, the layout of pages obtained may be standard United Kingdom, United States, German or other.
