    • The process is used to make surface-coated components like contact members for vacuum switches in that a local area (15) of the surface of a metal substrate (1) is melted by means of an energy pulse (12) and an additive (8) is applied to the molten material of the local area (15). This process is designed to produce even large-area components with little outlay on equipment. This is achieved in the following manner: before the local area (15) is melted, the substrate (1) is preheated to a temperature lying considerably above that of the room but still below its melting point. After preheating, the local area (15) of the substrate surface is melted and the additive is applied thereto in the form of a loose layer of powder (10). The local area (15) melted by the current of energy (12) is taken to and through the powder layer (10) so that the powder in the layer (10) is wetted or the powder layer (10) is immersed in the molten material from the locally melted area (15) so that the powder of the layer (10) is bonded to the surface of the substrate (1) and the desired surface-coating (16) is formed.
