    • A subsea test tree includes a body having a flow passage therethrough. A closure valve is movable between open and closed positions for opening and closing the flow passage. A signal receiver of the subsea test tree receives an acoustic command signal transmitted down a pipe string connecting the subsea test tree to a floating surface structure. An actuator is operably associated with the signal receiver and moves the closure valve to one of its open and closed positions in response to the acoustic command signal. Acoustic couplers are connected between adjacent pipe segments for aiding in the transmission of the acoustic signals across joints between pipe segments. A double sliding sleeve valve hydraulic connector connects fluid passages of an upper portion of the subsea test tree with fluid passages of a lower portion of the subsea test tree. A hydraulically powered latch connects and disconnects the upper and lower portions of the subsea test tree in response to the acoustic command signals.

    • A full opening emergency release and safety valve includes a valve housing having a flow passage therethrough and adapted to be connected to a lower portion of a tubing string. A full opening ball valve is disposed in the valve housing for opening and closing the flow passage. A stinger assembly is adapted to be connected to an upper portion of the tubing string, and includes a stinger mandrel releasably telescopingly received within the valve housing and operably associated with the ball valve for opening and closing the ball valve in response to manipulation of the upper portion of the tubing string. A threaded connecting collar releasably interconnects the valve housing and the stinger assembly. The valve housing, ball valve, stinger assembly and threaded connecting collar are so arranged and constructed that, when disconnecting the threaded connecting collar, a first predetermined number of rotations of the stinger assembly in a right-hand direction relative to the valve housing is necessary to allow the ball valve to close the flow passage, and an additional predetermined number of rotations of the stinger assembly in the right-hand direction relative to the valve housing is necessary to release the stinger assembly from the valve housing. Several alternative embodiments of such an apparatus are disclosed along with methods of using the same.

    • A hydraulically operated subsea test tree is disclosed for placement in a blowout preventer stack position on a sea floor above an oil well wherein fluid pressure from one side a set of rams is directed to a first side of a ball valve operating piston, and fluid pressure on the second side of said operating piston is directed to an area on the other side of the set of rams. By closing the rams and applying fluid pressure to the one side of the rams, the ball valve is moved from the closed to the opened position. Tandem ball valves are disclosed, each of which are hydraulic pressure operated to open, and spring operated to close such that the ball valves close when pressure on either side of the blowout preventer rams is equalized. A quick release is also disclosed which operates to release a stinger from a conduit leading to the surface when pressure is applied to one side of a second set of closed rams above the pressure which exists in the annulus exterior of the quick release mechanism. A means is also disclosed for varying the spacing between passageway inlets to accommodate for variations in blowout preventer stack designs.

    • A shock absorber device for inclusion in a tool string to provide rapid shock dissipation for shock forces traveling up or down the string. The device includes a tubular mandrel and an outer casing that forms an annular chamber therearound. At least one annular piston and one or more metering sleeves are formed integral with the outer casing and function to divide the annular chamber into a plurality of annular chambers that are filled with either nitrogen gas or silicone oil under selected pressures. Thus, the mandrel supports the lower tool string resiliently due to the fluid supported annular pistons such that any shock wave traveling along the tool string will be rapidly dissipated at the fluid piston interfaces.

    • A bridge plug apparatus includes a mandrel assembly having an operating fluid passageway disposed therein. A releasable coupling assembly has an upper end adapted to be connected to a tubing string and has a lower portion adapted to be releasably connected to the mandrel assembly. An annular packer is disposed about the mandrel assembly. A mechanical first slip assembly is connected to the mandrel assembly below the packer. A hydraulic second slip assembly is connected to the mandrel assembly above the packer. A power piston is disposed about the mandrel assembly for longitudinally compressing and radially expanding the packer to seal the packer in response to an increase in fluid pressure within the operating fluid passageway of the mandrel assembly. A hydraulically actuatable releasing device is provided for releasing a latched connection between the coupling assembly and the mandrel assembly. This releasing device is defined upon a power sleeve slidably disposed about the mandrel assembly. This power sleeve also has defined thereon a first valve portion for closing a bypass passage of the mandrel assembly and a second valve portion for trapping fluid under pressure within a portion of the operating fluid passageway of the mandrel assembly communicated with the hydraulic second slip assembly and the power piston.

    • A flow tester valve apparatus includes a housing having a flow passage disposed therethrough with a flow valve disposed therein for opening and closing the flow passage. A power mandrel is disposed in the housing and includes a power piston. The power mandrel is operatively associated with the flow valve for moving the flow valve from its closed position to its open position. A power port transmits pressure from a well annulus to a first side of the power piston. A first chamber is disposed in the housing and filled at least partially with a compressible liquid and a second side of the power piston is in fluid communication with the first chamber. A second chamber is disposed in the housing and includes a floating piston which divides the second chamber into a first zone and a second zone. An equalizing port is disposed in the housing for transmitting pressure from the well annulus to the second zone of the second chamber. Pressurizing and depressurizing passages communicate the first chamber with the first zone of the second chamber. A first back pressure check valve and a first flow restrictor are disposed in the pressurizing passage. A second back pressure check valve and a second flow restrictor are disposed in the second passage. The power piston may include a main piston and a booster piston.

    • A method and apparatus are presented which are particularly useful in testing the production capabilities of offshore oil wells. The apparatus includes a normally closed, weight operated valve which opens a preset delay after the weight operated valve is subjected to sufficient weight such as when a test string is set down upon, and supported by, a packer isolating an underground formation; and a normally open, weight and pressure operated valve which closes immediately when the test string is set down upon the packer. The weight and pressure operated valve expands a sealed chamber when subjected to sufficient weight to close its associated valve. The weight and pressure operated valve also includes a pressure responsive piston which opens and closes the valve, and which is responsive to the pressure in the sealed chamber, and to fluid pressure in the well annulus. Thus, when the pressure in the annulus acting on the piston, aided by the low pressure in the sealed chamber, is sufficient to overcome the weight of the test string acting on the closed weight and pressure operated valve, the valve will move from its closed to its open position, thereby allowing a testing program to be conducted by increasing and decreasing the pressure in the annulus. Also included in the test string is a collapsing slip joint which allows movement in the test string in order that the pressure responsive piston may move to operate the weight and pressure operated valve in response to pressure changes in the annulus. A testing string results in which the production of the oil well may be tested by lowering into the well a normally closed, weight operated valve adjacent to a normally open, weight and pressure operated valve; setting a packer to isolate the formation to be tested; adding sufficient weight on the packer to immediately close the weight and pressure operated valve, and to open the weight operated valve after a predetermined delay; and, increasing and decreasing the pressure in the fluid in the well annulus to responsively open and close the weight and pressure operated valve to thereby test the formation.
