    • A self-clamping spline and mortice joint is utilized at each of the corners of a rail and stile door. Mortices in each of the rail and stiles extend to the top or bottom edges of the door and a spline is received in the mortices and is exposed along the top and bottom edges of the door. Screws extend through the spline in opposite directions and into the rail and stile functioning to pull the rail and stile together around the spline. The self-clamping joint requires no external clamping. The self-clamping joint may be used on a plank-type door where the spline is L-shaped with one leg extending into the mortices and the second leg extending horizontally over the door end edges to cover the ends of the vertical grooves in the faces of the door. Weatherstripping on the door frame engages the horizontal leg of the spline and prevents transmission of air and moisture from the outside to the inside through the grooves.

    • A thermal and moisture resistant door comprising a perimeter framework consisting of top and bottom rails and opposite vertical stiles and an interior framework secured to the stiles and rails. The interior framework consists of a series of panels fitted into the stiles and rails. The stiles and rails are a 9-ply structure consisting of a pine core having on the interior and exterior sides two cross-banding layers, a vapor barrier layer and an outer oak veneer. The panels consist of a 13-ply structure including a pine core having on the interior and exterior sides two cross-banding layers, a vapor barrier layer and inner and outer oak layer. Each edge of each panel is elongated in order to fit into a corresponding oak block on the associated stile or rail. Each panel is routed or moulded such that the inner wood layer is visible, while the remaining layers of the panel are substantially concealed.

    • A one-piece metal frame fin is locked to the wooden frame members of a window unit by exterior cladding. A notch in the frame members receives the inner portion of the nailing fin while the outer portion of the fin is recessed into the wood when the fin is in its closed position for storage, transport and use in abutting frame members of multiple window units. An L-shaped corner nailing fin is carried on one of the frame fins and can be pivoted into locking engagement with the adjacent frame fin during installation of the window unit. In the case of joined multiple window units a mullion cover extends over the adjacent ends of the frame nailing fins and is locked to the outer nose portion of the exterior cladding. Use of foam sealing strips eliminates the need for on the job site caulking.

    • A retractable flexible screen for installation to a frame of a fenestration product, the frame having opposite pairs of frame members. The flexible screen extending and retracting across an opening in the fenestration product and including flexible screen material and a roller system upon which the screen material is unwound and wound. The roller system mounting to a pair of mounting brackets, each attachable to one of the pairs of frame members. A control bar connects to the screen material and moves along a pair of tracks each mountable to the same pair of frame members, the screen material extending from the roller system to one of the other pair of frame members. A gripper system mounts in the tracks and grips the screen material in a closed flexible screen. A spring tensioning system provides post-installation access to adjust the tension of a spring within the roller system.

    • A self draining door threshold includes a wedge-shaped silicone check valve in communication with a water reservoir on the interior side. The check valve is normally closed but will yieldably open in response to water pressure which overcomes the resilience of the silicone material and the air pressure on the top wall of the wege-shaped passageway. The check valve functions as a seal against incoming air but will open to allow escape of water as needed. The silicone material seals around foreign material in the valve making it air tight. The bottom edge of the door includes moisture resistant material having an upwardly extending portion received in a groove. The exterior side of the door is also covered with moisture resistant material which has inwardly extending portions received in a vertical groove between abutting panels. A moisture resistant plate extends along the bottom edge of the door and has downwardly extending portions engaging the weather seal on the threshold on the exterior side and a wood portion of the threshold on the interior side. The plate directs water from the vertical groove outwardly of the door.
