    • A mounting for a windshield wiper pivot shaft on a vehicle cowl panel includes a transmission having a housing defining a base surface and a tower projecting from the base surface, a bore through the tower for rotatably supporting the pivot shaft, a rectangular aperture in the cowl panel having a pivot edge, a circular aperture in the cowl panel overlapping the rectangular aperture, a lip on the housing at one end of the base surface, and protuberances on the housing on an imaginary circle having a radius corresponding to but slightly larger than the radius of the circular aperture. The transmission is mounted on the cowl panel by inserting the tower through the overlapped apertures, hooking the lip on the pivot edge, and pivoting the housing toward the cowl panel so that the protuberances engage the circular aperture in interference fit fashion to remove all clearance between the transmission and the cowl panel when the base surface abuts the cowl panel.

    • An apparatus for detecting moisture on the windscreen of a motor vehicle has an illumination source and a light sensor mounted within the motor vehicle. The light sensor detects light rays from the light source reflected off the windscreen via a diffusion surface within the motor vehicle. Based upon the sensed reflected light, an image processor in communication with the light sensor creates an image of a portion of the windscreen that the processor analyzes to determine the moisture condition of the windscreen.A method for controlling the operation of the windscreen wiper system monitors light reflected from a portion of a windscreen and creates an image of the moisture condition of the windscreen based on the reflected light. The image is analyzed to determine the configuration of light intensities in predetermined zones. From the light intensity configuration, the moisture condition of the windscreen is determined. The sensed moisture condition parameters are compared to a threshold array and a signal based upon this comparison is communicated the wiper, defogger, or headlight control system.

    • A water drop sensor comprises a pair of electrodes disposed in association with a portion of a surface of a vehicle window within a wipe pattern and having edges defining an extended insulating gap between the electrodes. The electrodes define a gap which varies in width over the range of diameters of drops to be sensed. The result is that the sensor shows more sensitivity to larger drops than to smaller drops as compared with a similar sensor having a constant gap width. The variation in gap width may be continuous or stepwise over the total range of drop diameters.
