    • A color ink-jet printer having a heating blower system for evaporating ink carriers from the print medium after ink-jet printing. A preheat drive roller engages the medium and draws it to a print zone. The drive roller is heated and preheats the medium before it reaches the print zone. At the print zone, a print heater heats the underside of the medium via radiant and convective heat transfer through an opening pattern formed in a print zone heater screen. The amount of heat energy is variable, depending on the type of the print medium. A crossflow fan at the exit side of the print zone direct an airflow at the print zone in order to cause turbulence at the medium surface being printed and further accelerate evaporation of the ink carriers from the medium. An exhaust fan and duct system exhausts air and ink carrier vapor away from the print zone and out of the printer housing.

    • A color ink-jet printer having a heating and air evacuation system for evaporating ink carriers from the print medium after ink-jet printing. A medium advancement system advances the print medium from an input tray to the print zone. At the print zone, a print heater whose position is fixed in relation to the printer body heats the medium to cause accelerated drying of the ink deposited on the medium. An exhaust fan and duct system exhausts air and ink carrier vapor away from the print zone and out of the printer housing. The duct system includes an elongated inlet opening fixed in position relative to the printer body and disposed along the extent of the printer housing. The air and ink carrier vapors are drawn into the inlet opening and away from the print zone.

    • A thermal ink jet printhead cartridge priming apparatus that includes a plurality of caps respectively associated with a plurality of printhead nozzle arrays for controllably sealing printhead nozzle arrays pursuant to engagement thereof against the printhead cartridge to surround the nozzle arrays, a plurality of vacuum conveying elements respectively associated with the caps for individually conveying priming vacuum to an associated cap, a manually actuated selector assembly for connecting a selected one of the vacuum conveying elements to a source of priming vacuum, and a source of priming vacuum spaced apart from the manually actuated selection means for selectively engaging the selector assembly for application of vacuum thereto, such that a selected printhead cartridge is primed without removal thereof from the carriage and without use of a motorized vacuum pump. By separating the vacuum source from the selector, positive pressure is not applied to the nozzle arrays when the caps are brought into engagement with the printhead cartridges since venting is provided by the unobstructed vacuum conveying elements.

    • Ink jet printhead primer apparatus including a resilient bellows having an upper end cap, a lower end cap, a capper having an opening supported by the upper end cap selective sealing engagement with a nozzle array of a printhead so that negative pressure produced in the opening of the upper end cap is communicated to the nozzles of the nozzle array, or with a conduit structure connected to the nozzles of the nozzle array. Displacement of the lower end cap is controlled by cam surfaces formed on the inner opposing surfaces of parallel plate-like gear sectors of a rotatable cam assembly having gear teeth that drive a flywheel. Cam edges on the gear sectors move a sliding cam member that moves the upper end cap between a retracted position and an extended position. Pursuant to rotation of the cam assembly in one direction and then in the opposite direction, negative pressure is produced at the capper opening as it is engaged with the nozzle array of the cartridge to be primed or with the conduit structure connected to the nozzle array, ink suctioning negative pressure is produced, and the capper is disengaged from the nozzle array or the conduit structure while negative pressure continues to be maintained at the opening of the capper.

    • In a plotter (10) having a plurality of pens (14) stored in a rotatable turret (16) for selective use in a plotting operation, the turret may be rotated by the drive motor (32) used to move the paper (12) bidirectionally, thereby eliminating the cost and weight associated with a pen turret drive motor. The rotation of the turret is mechanically coupled to a grit wheel shaft (34), which is used to move the paper and which is driven by the paper drive motor. The turret is positioned on a spindle (86) provided with slots (88) associated with the location of the pens. The bottom of the spindle is provided with a worm gear (110), which is continuously engaged by a worm (94) mounted on one end of a worm shaft (96). The grit wheel shaft is also provided with a gear (104) which is selectively engageable by a sliding gear (102) mounted on the other end of the worm shaft. A lever engager (98) is actuated by a foot (106 ) on the bottom of the carriage assembly (56) which supports a pen during the plotting operation. Upon actuation by the foot, the lever engager causes the sliding gear to engage the grit wheel shaft gear, thereby coupling rotation of the grit wheel shaft to the spindle. A spring (112) on the worm shaft returns the sliding gear to its disengaged position. The lever engager includes a walking stop (100) to engage the preselected slot in the spindle to provide appropriate orientation of the turret for removal or replacement of a pen therein.
