    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing a highly active, substantially amorphous double metal cyanide (DMC) catalyst with a very low mole ratio of a metal salt to the mole of a cyanide salt metal. SOLUTION: The process for preparing the double metal cyanide (DMC) catalyst comprises reacting, in an aqueous solution, a transition metal salt having an alkalinity of at least 2 wt.% based on the amount of the transition metal salt in the mole ratio of water to total cations of less than 150, with a metal cyanide salt in the molar ratio of transition metal to cyanide salt metal of less than 2.9:1 and in the molar ratio of an organic complexing ligand to transition metal of more than 1 in the presence of the organic complexing ligand, and in the molar ratio of cyanide-free anion to a metal cyanide salt anion of more than about 3 in the presence of a cyanide-free compound containing an anion and an alkali metal, and the process provides the highly active, substantially amorphous double metal cyanide (DMC) catalysts.
