    • An alarm for detecting transient senic events determines an estimate of background environmental acoustic events or noise by computing a short time correlation function for individual segments of data and then subtracting an estimated mean of the correlation function. Acoustical events which represent major excursions from the measured background are detected as transient events. The background is continuously updated within selected processing periods chosen to maintain an accurate differentiation for transient events. In further aspects, the residual correlation function is generally detected using a .chi..sup.2 statistic which is computed using an estimated covariance of the correlation function and the residual correlation function for a specific window. If a given residual does not represent a detected transient event, that residual is used to estimate the mean and covariance of the background using an exponential integrator.

    • A system for detecting and removing metal objects from a continuously moving conveyor belt. The system includes mechanisms for lowering a scraper blade and for raising an assembly of horizontally disposed idlers mounted on a movable platform, which are activated simultaneously upon the approach of a metal object traveling on the belt. The idlers, when raised, cause a section of the belt, which is otherwise trough-like in shape, to flatten. The flattened section of the belt and the blade, in its lowered position, are disposed in close proximity to each other. The metal object and overburden moving with it on the flattened section of the belt are forced against the scraper blade. Set at an acute angle to the belt centerline, the blade deflects the metal object and overburden contaminated by it laterally, causing them to slide first onto an unsupported portion of the belt and then gently off of the belt itself. Once the metal object has been removed, the blade is raised and the platform is lowered, moving the idlers mounted on it out of contact with the belt. When not in use, these idlers are situated beneath an array of paired, downwardly sloping idlers. Even though a metal object is detected in a time interval between the detection and removal of another metal object traveling upstream of it on the belt, controls are provided to insure the removal of both metal objects.

    • An array of idlers supporting a conveyor belt except beneath a generally crescent-shaped section opening outwardly to one side thereof. The array includes idlers of various lengths and orientations. Each of the idlers is disposed perpendicularly to the centerline of the belt. Both upstream and downstream of the crescent-shaped section, pairs of idlers slope downwardly toward each other on either side of the belt centerline. Where the belt is supported by these pairs of idlers, it assumes a trough-like configuration. Proximate the cresent-shaped section, on the other hand, the idlers are unpaired and disposed horizontally. The shortest of these unpaired idlers is situated to one side of the cresent-shaped section at its greatest transverse width. On the other side but still within this section, the lip of the belt is virtually unsupported forming a soft spot. This soft spot is sized and situated so that any burden carried by the conveyor tends to remain on it unless a force is specifically applied to deflect objects within the burden laterally. When force is applied which causes a sufficiently large object to move transversely across the soft spot, the crescent-shaped section acts as a chute. In such instances, the belt lip sages downwardly, becoming the lowest part of the belt and allowing the deflected objects to slide easily off the belt. As a result, less force is required to push objects off the side of the conveyor than would otherwise be the case, and the life of the belt is extended.

    • An alerting process is presented that uses the steps of first receiving at least a first signal from a signal source for a predetermined short interval. The first signal is analyzed over the predetermined short interval to obtain the spectral energy of the first signal within contiguous incremental frequency bands that extend over the frequency spectrum of interest. The energy value obtained for each incremental frequency band is then stored as a short term integrated value in a memory at an address location corresponding to the incremental frequency. Successive short term integrated values are then integrated over a predetermined long term interval to obtain a long term integrated value for each respective incremental frequency band. Each short term integrated value is then divided by the corresponding long term integrated value to obtain an enhanced STI frequency value for each incremental frequency band. The frequency of each enhanced STI frequency value exceeding a predetermined threshold is then stored in a memory system. A present track frequency value is calculated as the centroid of adjacent stored STI frequency values. Present track frequency values are correlated with past track frequency values to form and extend frequency tracks. The variance value for each present track frequency value is calculated for a predetermined number of past frequency values corresponding to the same frequency track. An alert signal is provided in response to a variance value exceeding a predetermined threshold.
