    • The invention relates to a housing 1 for a micro-irrigation emitter which freely expels unfiltered turbid fluids containing suspended particulate matter, for the irrigation of plants. The housing comprises a thin-walled invert dished shape having a bottommost outer rim (2 figure 2) which rests upon the ground surface. Inboard from the rim the surface is solid and rises gently towards middle portion (4 figure 2) which rises up sharply to form a perforated domed surface within which an emitter 16 is secured. The invert shape ensures that the emitter is physically protected from above and that fluids drain out from below in their entirety. The ventilated portion 7 facilitates the free passage of air, water and water vapour. The combination of the outer solid surface and an internal impervious curtain wall 11 creates at least one air pocket (12 figure 2) to provide a degree of buoyancy for the housing. An irrigation supply hose 15 passes through the housing wall and is connected to the emitter and acts as a flexible tether or mooring enabling the housing to float on any accumulated slurry. A later embodiment relates to a method of employing said housing.

    • A moisture responsive device is described having a moisture responsive element comprising at least a moisture responsive formation of a first material in association with a less moisture responsive formation of a second material, in that the first material has a greater tendency to absorb moisture and to increase in volume as a result than the second material, the two formations being so mechanically arranged together that such swelling tends to cause mechanical deformation of the moisture responsive element; and an actuation member optionally of flexibly resilient material in mechanical association with the moisture responsive element so that distortion of the moisture responsive element in the presence of moisture tends to mechanically distort the actuation member and thereby cause the actuation member to change between at least a first functional state and a second functional state. A method of use, especially in irrigation control, is also described.
