    • The present invention relates to a connector assembly, in particular and optical connector assembly for making a releasable optical connection. There is provided an optical connector assembly having: a first connector (10); a second connector (14), the first connector and the second connector being releasably engagable with one another; and, a movable abutment member (70), the abutment member having a first position which allows the first and second connectors to move sufficiently into together such that a first level of optical coupling is possible, and a second position in which the first and second connectors are prevented from moving sufficiently together so as to achieve the first level of optical coupling, wherein the second position allows optical coupling at a second level that is less than the first level.

    • The present invention relates to the connection of a device, in particular the connection of a device to an optical network. It includes the steps of: making an optical connection between the optical network and the device, which connection is suitable for supporting communication at a first bit rate; transmitting data from the device over the optical connection at the first bit rate; using the transmitted data to determine at least one characteristic of the device; and, in dependence on the or each determined characteristic, modifying a physical aspect of the optical connection such that the connection is suitable for transmitting data at a second bit rate higher than the first bit rate. The connection at the first bit rate can be used to determine whether transmission at the second bit rate is appropriate.
