    • The invention provides apparatus (10) for spraying a coating composition onto a substrate comprising means for forming a curtain of the coating composition and means for atomising the formed curtain. The curtain of coating composition is formed by allowing it to flow over a transfer surface (14, 43, 53). Preferably the transfer surface (43) has upstand portions (44) thereon, to ensure that the coating composition flows over the transfer surface (43) in a uniform manner. Alternatively, the transfer surface (53) is convex. The curtain of the coating composition is atomised using an air knife which preferably follow a fan-shaped or diverging path before it contacts the curtain of coating composition, so that the stream of air supplied is evenly distributed across the whole width of the curtain.

    • A rapid laying arrangement for interlocking concrete or clay roof tiles (T1, T2, T3, T4) is provided by a plurality of tile supports (2) of moulded plastics, e.g. polyethylene, on which the tiles are located in half-bond relationship. Each support (2) provides four tile modules (8, 10, 12, 14) each of which has associated snap-fit tile fixing means by which the tiles are secured thereto which means is provided by hooks (50, 52, 54, 56) for engaging associated sidelock portions of the tiles and jaw-like members (70, 72) for engaging associated headlap portions of the tiles. Each support (2) also has resilient portions adjacent the jaw-like members (70, 72) for resisting loads impacting on the tiles secured on the support (2). Carrying handles (118, 120) are provided to enable a tiler to carry the supports and tiles assembled thereon, the supports each also comprising lugs (100, 102, 104) for location, in use, in complementary recesses (106, 108, 110). To complete the laying arrangement and secure the supports (2) and thus the tiles (T1, T2, T3, T4) to a roof appropriate fasteners are inserted through apertures (112, 114, 116) into the boarding (130) of the roof structure.

    • A roof structure which has a plurality of concrete tiles (12) arranged in overlapping rows on a roof support structure is provided with at least one roof ventilation device for venting the underside of the roof support structure. The roof ventilation device (20) receives and integrates with a plurality of shortened tiles in an upper row (22) to provide the roof ventilation without disturbing the appearance and continuity of the roof structure. A hollow upper portion (28) of the roof ventilation device which is generally continuous with the tiles in the upper row forms part of a ventilation path which extends from outside the roof structure to one or more apertures in the roof support structure. At the same time, the hollow upper portion has a plurality of baffles (30) disposed therein for preventing entry of rainwater from the outside. A length of mesh mounted within an inside portion of the roof ventilation device at the back of the upper portion prevents entry of insects, vermin and debris, while foam strips mounted on the mesh seal the space above tiles in a lower row. A rear portion of the roof ventilation device, which receives the lower edges of the upper row of tiles against foam strips mounted thereon, includes clips for engaging the side edges of such tiles to hold the lower portions thereof in place. A plurality of spaced apart legs extend downwardly from the rear portion into contact with the roof support structure, and extend forwardly into contact with the upper edges of a lower row of tiles. A separate venting aperture in the roof support structure below each of the tiles in the upper row has a moisture frame mounted therein with a collar extending above the roof support structure to prevent water on the roof support structure from flowing into the aperture.

    • The invention is concerned with an improved method of roofing and a roof structure provided by said method. The improved method of roofing comprises the steps of: a) providing a roof structure including spaced rafters (2); b) locating panels (4) between associated pairs of said rafters to form a closed roof structure; c) procuring a plurality of carrier frames (6) for roofing tiles (8); d) mounting at least one tile (8) on each carrier frame (6); and e) fixing said frames (6) to said panels (4); wherein said panels (4) each comprise recesses (24) adapted to receive, in use, associated protuberances (42) of the carrier frames (6) whereby said frames (6) and the tiles (8) mounted thereon are fixed to the roof structures as aforesaid. An advantage of the present invention is that it provides a quick and easy method of constructing a roof structure which avoids the use of nails, clips and pegs and other such fixing arrangements.

    • A concrete tile (32) of integral, one-piece construction has left side (44) and right side (46) portions of different colouring which extends through the entire thickness of the relatively thin, generally planar tile. An upper surface of the tile has a groove (28) therein which separates the differently coloured left side (44) and right side (46) portions. The left (44) and right (46) side portions have different lengths, providing the tile with a stepped front edge. A method of making the tile dispenses wet mortar (18, 20) having two diferent colours into a partitioned pug box (16) for disposition onto opposite sides of a pallet (22), so that the two different colours reside on opposite sides of the pallet (22) in side-by-side relation. The wet mortar is metered and compressed by a roller (80) and shaped by a slipper (106) to provide a ribbon of mortar with a desired cross-sectional shape, following which the ribbon of mortar is then chopped by a knife (14) assembly to form the individual tiles with desired edge configurations. The mortar is cured and then removed from the pallets (22) to form the completed tiles.
