    • A torsion element such as a shaft portion of reduced diameter connects a driven steering shaft to a manually actuated steering drive shaft. A helical spring coupling connects a driving gear operated by a reversible electric motor in such a way that when the torque applied to the torsion element is at or near zero, or torque can be transmitted from the motor to the driven shaft, whereas the presence of torque causes the spring to be expanded, as a result of which the motor is coupled to the driven shaft with a frictional engagement that increases the transmission as the manually applied torque is increased. As soon as the manually applied torque falls below a threshold value, the coupling of the motor is released. The motor accordingly does not need to have its speed controlled and is operated by a simple directional control responsive to the deformation of the torsion element. The system is essentially fail-safe and accordingly suitable for steering vehicles.

    • To monitor current flowing through various load lines, typically to the supply lines for the lighting system of the vehicle (headlights, brake lights, position lights) each line has a ferrite core with approximately rectangular hysteresis characteristic threaded thereon, through which additionally a test signal wire and a read signal wire are threaded. The test signal wire is connected to an ac source, the read signal wire to an indicator lamp through an amplifier so that, when current flows through the supply line, the core will saturate and no ac will be transferred from the test signal wire to the read signal wire; upon interruption of current flow, for example due to burnout of a lamp, current will flow through the test indicator, typically a lamp, which will light indicating malfunction.

    • An electric wiper motor drives a wiper and has first and second wiper motor terminals. The wiper wipes the front of a vehicle headlight, a vehicle windshield or the like. A switch device includes a switch contact electrically connected to the first wiper motor terminal, a work contact and a rest contact, and a rotating device mechanically coupled to and driven by the wiper motor and operative for causing the switch contact to alternately come into electrical engagement with the work contact and with the rest contact. A source of electrical energy has first and second source terminals. The first and second wiper motor terminals are connected to the first and second source terminals, respectively, to establish a principal motor current path for the flow of wiper motor drive current. The principal motor current path can be closed and interrupted. An electric pump motor drives a pump which discharges a washing fluid onto the surface to be washed, and has first and second pump motor terminals. The first source terminal is electrically connected to the work contact for establishing an auxiliary current path for the flow of motor drive current when the switch contact is in electrical engagement with the work contact. The first pump motor terminal is electrically connected to the rest contact and the second pump motor terminal to the second source terminal, for establishing a braking current path for the flow of wiper motor braking current through the pump motor when the switch contact is in electrical engagement with the rest contact and the principal motor current path is in the interrupted condition.

    • The arrangement includes a windshield wiper drive motor and a source of electrical energy. A relay includes a relay winding connected to the source for energization thereby and includes an associated relay switch operative when the relay winding becomes energized for connecting the motor to the source to initiate motor operation. A temperature-dependent blocking unit is operative when above a predetermined temperature for preventing energization of the relay winding, and is operative when below a predetermined temperature for permitting energization of the relay winding. A wiper-position-dependent switch arrangement is operative when the wiper leaves a predetermined end position thereof for deenergizing the relay winding and establishing a heating current path for the flow of a heating current to heat up the blocking unit, and is operative when the wiper reaches the end position thereof for interrupting the heating current path so as to initiate cooling of the blocking unit. Thus the wiper remains in the end position while the blocking unit cools down. After elapse of a sufficient cooling time interval, the blocking means reassumes a temperature sufficiently low to permit renewed energization of the relay winding, and accordingly renewed operation of the wiper drive motor.
