    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a sensor element which is stable against a thermal shock at a time when a temperature is changed and whose heating efficiency is good, by a method wherein a heating conductor is arranged inside a layer plane of a layer structure, in such a way that its heating efficiency is distributed uniformly at least over the cross section of the layer structure. SOLUTION: A sensor element is composed of an electrochemical measuring cell 12 and of a heating element 14. The measuring cell 12 comprises a functional-layer-side layer structure 12' which is provided with a first sheet 16 and with a second sheet 18. A reference passage 20 is built integrally in the second sheet 18. A measuring electrode 22 is arranged on the measuring-gas- side surface of the sheet 16. A reference electrode 24 is arranged on the surface of the sheet 16, which is arranged and installed so as to correspond to the reference passage 20. A porous coating layer 26 having a layer thickness of, e.g. 0.1 mm is formed on the measuring electrode 22. The heating element 14 comprises a heating conductor 30 which is buried inside two insulating layers 28, 29. The layer thickness of both insulating layers 28, 29 is nearly equal. An outside coating sheet 32 is formed so as to succeed to the insulating layer 29 on one side.
