    • A process for the preparation of a multimodal polyethylene comprising: in a stage (A) polymerising ethylene and optionally at least one C 3-20 alpha olefin in the presence of a metallocene compound of formula (I) R i (CpR’ j )(CpR" k )MQ 2 (wherein M is Ti, Hf or Zr; Cp is cyclopentadienyl; R is a bridge linking the two Cp groups; each R' is independently a C 1-20 hydrocarbyl group optionally containing at least one heteratom selected from O, Si, Ge or P; each R" is independently a C 1-20 -hydrocarbyl group optionally containing at least one heteratom selected from O, Si, Ge or P and two or more adjacent R" substituents may form a cyclic structure fused to the Cp ring which may be substituted by at least one group R'; each Q is a sigma ligand and optionally two Q ligands, taken together may form a cyclic structure containing the metal atom; I is 0 or 1; j is an integer of 3 to 5-i; and k is 0 to 5-i.); and a cocatalyst; to produce a lower molecular weight component; and in a stage (B) polymersing ethylene and at least one C 3-20 alpha olefin in the presence of the same metallocene as employed in stage (A); and a cocatalyst; to produce a higher molecular weight component; wherein said stages (A) and (B) can be carried out in any order.
