    • 978,117. Oil and/or gas burners. BLOOM ENGINEERING CO. Inc. Sept. 6, 1962 [April 16, 1962], No. 34151/62. Headings F4B and F4T. A burner 11 mounted in a furnace wall 34 comprises a tubular air duct 28 fitted at its inner end with a refractory baffle 45 having a central opening 48 for a fuel tube 39 and a plurality of spaced inclined air openings 51 discharging hot or cold combustion air into the furnace. The openings 51 are arranged in a circle with their axes inclined at about 25 degrees to the burner axis 32, the inlet ends 53 being radiused to reduce turbulence, and the outlet ends 54 intersect the outer periphery of a central dished portion 50 on the front face 49 of the baffle 45. The openings 51 may be inclined radially outwardly from inlet to outlet end and may also be bent. The baffle 45 is sealed in the air duct 28 by an annular layer of refractory cement 46 and may be provided with an opening 56 for a pilot lighter 57. Gas is supplied to a fitting 41 of the fuel tube 39 through a conduit 42 which may be tangential to the fitting 41 to produce whirling of the gas. The fitting 41 has a plate 43 which may be removed to enable an emulsion type mixing and atomizing nozzle to be fitted (Fig. 6, not shown) which supplies a mixture of fuel oil and steam or compressed air to an axially disposed tube having a discharge orifice at the inner end of the baffle 45. With this arrangement the burner may be operated on fuel oil and/or with gas of relatively high calorific value, e.g. natural or coke oven gas. In another construction, Fig. 8 (not shown), fuel gas of low calorific value may be used in which. case the air openings in the baffle are inclined at 15 degrees, and the fuel tube 39 has an internal diameter greater than one half that of the tubular air duct 28 and is cooled by circulating coolant through a hollow cylindrical shield surrounding its inner end. In Fig. 1, the burner 11 is shown mounted in the upper part of a rectangular one-way top-fired soaking pit furnace 10. The furnace 10 comprises a flue opening 18 leading to a flue 19, a removable cover 17 and thermocouples 21, 23.
