    • The invention relates to a process and apparatus for the controlled electrochemical deposition of metals and alloys involving the use of the phenomenon of acoustic flow. It is important to control the diffusion of metal ions to the cathode surface during the electrochemical deposition of metals. This will determine the material distribution, the composition of the alloy, the microstructure, and the physical and chemical properties of the metal deposited. The agitation techniques used before in electrochemical metal deposition were typically characterized by a poorly defined liquid movement, in which the liquid particles were moved and rotated at random in all three spatial directions. By contrast, acoustic flow, brought about by ultrasound, permits a high degree of control over the diffusion of the metal ions, because it involves a stationary and predominantly one-dimensional liquid movement without the formation of bubbles. The combination of acoustic flow and the pulsed plating technique makes it possible to achieve in the present process a previously unseen degree of control over the metal ion diffusion in the electrolyte used, which in turn permits the precise regulation of e.g. the composition of the alloy, the material distribution and the microstructure of the metal layer deposited.

    • An article to be inserted in a human or animal body cavity, use of the article and preparation thereof. The article has a biologically inhibiting arrangement of electrically connected electrode materials in direct contact with each other on one or more surfaces of the article The arrangement includes as electrode materials a metallic anode material and a cathode material, where the potential of the cathode material is higher than the potential of the anode material, The cathode material is an electrically conductive material selected among certain non-metallic materials. The arrangement provided on the article releases biological inhibiting ions of the metallic anode material or complexes of such ions when the biologically inhibiting arrangement is contacted with a body fluid. The article can be designed with a controlled release rate suitable for the purpose in question for example an initial high rate of ion release after insertion of a catheter to combat bacteria introduced during the insertion followed by a prolonged release at a lower rate to maintain a low level of bacteria.
