    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to feed a coating material in the direction of a cross machine by providing supporting beam extended in the direction of a cross machine, feeding a fluid into the supporting beam so as to maintain its temperature constant so as to suppress deformation of a supporting beam, caused by the heat in a coating apparatus and to prevent the bending deformation of the coating apparatus. SOLUTION: A supporting beam 52 is formed on a rigid rectangular formed- material, where the position of the supporting beam 52 is equal to or higher than that of a coating apparatus. The coating apparatus is separated from a packing roll when operation starts or a piece of paper is broken. An expansion air-pipe 50 is placed between the supporting beam 52 and the lower plate of the first fitting assembly 42 so that heat insulation can be realized between a coating head 28 and the supporting beam 52, and then a fluid for controlling temperature, preferably water, is fed by a pump, resulting in keeping the temperatures of the supporting beam 52 within a limited range and eliminating a temperature-gradient. Thus, a coating material is fed uniformly in the direction of a cross machine.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating apparatus and a coating method capable of carrying out uniform coating on a web in the whole width. SOLUTION: Two coating material-supplying pipes are arranged parallel with each other and extended in the whole width of a moving undercoating in the cross-machine direction. A coating material is separately supplied from the end parts on the opposite to each other of the two coating material supplying pipes and released to the coating interior formed between both sidewalls through metering holes arranged in the sidewalls of the respective coating material supplying pipes at intervals. The pressure decrease of the coating material in one pipe is canceled out by the pressure increase in the other pipe by installing the coating material supplying pipes as to generate convective current. At the time of the pressure decrease, a countermeasure to the decrease is carried out by changing the distance of the metering holes corresponding to the distance from the coating material inlets or changing the diameter of the metering holes or carrying out these two methods. In the case of coating with a heated coating material, since the temperature gradient tends to be generated, a countermeasure is carried out by parting the coating heads 28 from a supporting beam 52 by arms in cantilever-like manner and circulating a fluid for controlling the temperature in the inside of the supporting beam 52.
