    • A transitional duct (10A) is disclosed for guiding stock (12A) from a supply pipe (14A) of circular cross-sectional configuration to a header (16A) of a headbox (18), the header (16A) having a recttangular cross-sectional configuration. The duct (10A) includes an upstream portion (20) which defines an inlet (22) of circular cross-sectional configuration for cooperation with the circular cross-sectional configuration of the supply pipe (14A). The inlet (22) is disposed in fluid tight communication with the supply pipe (14A). A downstream portion (24) defines an outlet (26) of rectangular cross-sectional configuration for cooperating with the rectangular cross-sectional configuration of the header (16A). The outlet (26) is disposed in fluid tight communication with the header (16A). An intermediate portion (28) is disposed between the upstream (20) and the downstream portion (24). The intermediate portion (28) defines at least one internal step (30) such that the velocity of the stock (12A) flowing immediately upstream relative to the step (30) is higher than the velocity of the stock flowing immediately downstream relative to the step (30). The arrangement is such that turbulent mixing of the stock (12A) after passage of the stock over the step (30) enhances the generation of a uniform cross-sectional flow profile downstream relative to the step (30).

    • A basis weight control apparatus (10) is disclosed for controlling the cross-machine direction basis weight of a stream of stock (S) ejected from a headbox (12) onto a forming wire (14). The apparatus includes a plurality of conduits (18-22) with each conduit defining an outlet nozzle (24-28) disposed adjacent to a slice lip (30) of the headbox (12) and spaced relative to each adjacent nozzle in a cross-machine direction (CD). The conduits (18-22) are connected to a source of pressurized air (32). A plurality of control valves (34-38) are arranged with each valve (34-38) cooperating with a corresponding conduit (18-22) for controlling a flow of pressurized air (40) to each nozzle. A control device (42) is connected to the valves (34-38) for controlling the valves such that a flow of air to each of the nozzles (24-28) is permitted for controlling the cross-machine basis weight of the stream of stock (S). The arrangement is such that when the flow of air (40) through one of the nozzles is increased, the basis weight of the stream of stock (S) in the vicinity of the one nozzle is correspondingly reduced so that the basis weight of the stream of stock in a cross-machine direction is selectively controlled.

    • The present invention relates to a method for controlling the orientation of fibers within stock (S) flowing through and from a headbox (10) of a papermaking machine. The method includes the steps of generating an excess flow of the stock (12, 13) through edge tubes (14, 16) of a tube bank (18) relative to the flow of stock (S) through the remaining tubes (20, 21) of the tube bank (18). The arrangement is such that excess flow (12, 13) is attained by providing the edge tubes (14, 16) with a cross-machine directional flow area which is greater than the respective cross-machine directional flow area of each of the remainging tubes (20, 21). Stock (22, 24) is bled through the side walls (26, 28) of the headbox (10) adjacent to and downstream relative to the edge tubes (14, 16). The arrangement is such that the bleeding of the stock (22, 24) through the side walls (26, 28) compensates for any tendency for the flow of stock (S) from the respective edge tubes (14, 16) to converge towards each other so that the orientation of the fibers within the stock flowing from the headbox (10) is relatively uniform in a cross-machine direction (CD).
