    • An implementation of an ISDN router (100) enables computers interconnected to each other and to the ISDN to share resources by issuing operating system commands. One computer can access a storage disk or other resource of another computer distributed at any terminal location on the ISDN. Each disk on the Network has a unique name by which it is accessed. The configuration of the Network and number of computers distributed on it are transparent to each user. To improve bandwidth utilization of the ISDN line while sharing terminal resources, a B-channel allocation algorithm (180, 182, 184, 186) executed by routers (100) between the terminals and the ISDN line dynamically allocates bandwidth by monitoring (176) traffic at each destination queue and in response allocating (172) or deallocating (172) virtual B-channels (172, 174). Bandwidth utilization is optimized by packaging data packets into trains that are transmitted to the destination when the train is completed and upon satisfaction of other conditions. Each train undergoes data compression by execution of a suitable compression algorithm.

The SPC switch converts the Feature Group number to a line side number for the line side modem (50).

    • A method and system for providing mobile access to message delivery into the existing public telecommunications network. A portable handset (12) and transceiver (30, 32) have storage capacity (26) and a processor (22) for digitizing and time compressing messages inputted by the operator into the handset. Upon command of the handset operator the stored message is transmitted to a fixed site transceiver (40, 42) having storage capacity. The two transceivers are locked into communication by suitable handshake protocols. The fixed site transceiver (40, 42) is linked to the public switched telecommunications network and delivers the message stored in the fixed site storage to voice messaging service storage (56) in the public telecommunications network. The message thus stored is either delivered as by call completion service or retrieved by the addressee as in voice mail service. In both cases the signal from the VMS storage is processed to perform digital to analog conversion along with time decompression or expansion. The addressee, handling procedures, and billing information are incorporated into the original message in the handset transceiver. Periodic beacon signals may be provided at the fixed site transceiver to facilitate location thereof by the portable handset and transceiver.

    • Within a desired service area, multiple transmitters (TX) at separately located sites simultaneously broadcast the same multi-channel, multi-program signal. Broadcast waves from the transmitters (TX) propagate throughout substantially overlapping portions of the service area. Each broadcast channel carries a multiplexed digital data stream containing packets of information for a plurality of programs, e.g. TV programs. A shared antenna system (33), typically including multiple receiving antennae (31) aimed at a plurality of the transmitters (TX), supplies received signals to terminals (100) in a plurality of living units (75). The shared system (33) includes delayed signal processing circuitry (435) to supply an optimal signal from the receiving antennae (31) to the terminals (100). The delayed signal processing circuitry (453) has a processing time window of a predetermined value at least as large as the difference in arrival time of signals propagating to the shared system from the nearest and farthest transmitters from which the shared system receives direct transmission.

    • An improved method for password validation comprising the steps of identifying bad passwords having one or more characters; computing a frequency of occurrence of bad password characters; computing a probability of occurrence T of the bad password characters within the bad passwords based upon the computed frequency of occurrence; identifying a proposed password having one or more characters; and comparing the proposed password characters with the probability of occurrence T of the bad password characters.
