摘要： A needle assembly (30) is disclosed. The needle assembly includes a housing having a flash chamber (38), and having a distal end (40) and a proximal end (42) engageable with a specimen collection container. The assembly includes a cannula (34) having a patient end, a non-patient end, and a sidewall (48) extending therebetween defining a cannula interior (50). The patient end of the cannula projects at least partially from the distal end (74) of the housing, and the cannula interior is in fluid communication with the flash - chamber. The assembly further includes a shield (36) restrainably engaged with a portion of the housing and axially transitionable over the patient cannula from a retracted position in which the patient end is exposed, to an extended position in which the patient end is shielded by at least a portion of the shield, wherein at least a portion of the flash chamber is visible in the retracted position.

摘要： A system is provided which may be used for collecting and testing fluid samples at a patient point of care location. A disposable collection and containment device is provided for collecting a fluid sample directly into a containment chamber containing testing mechanisms using an integrated collection mechanism for immediate evaluation of the collected sample. The integrated collection cartridge contains an array of electrical contacts, electrochemical sensors and circuitry configured to electrically couple with an analytical device, such as a personal digital assistant (PDA) or a stand-alone computer workstation, which controls the testing of the fluid sample within the cartridge and provides a rapid indication of test results at the point of care.

摘要： A pre-packaged medical device includes a tray supporting a medical device such as a blood collection set including a needle assembly and a tube holder. The tray defines a first contoured portion supporting at least a portion of the needle assembly and a second contoured portion supporting the tube holder. The tray may have a tray body with a plurality of posts upstanding from a bottom wall in the first contoured portion for engaging the needle assembly. The posts may be positioned to maintain the needle assembly in a defined orientation while preventing the inadvertent actuation of the needle assembly, which may include a spring-driven safety shield. The configuration of the pre-packaged medical device allows sequential removal of the blood collection set, typically in the order of intended use including first removal of a needle assembly, second removal of tubing, and third removal of the tube holder.

In use, external pressure is applied by a user to at least one of the hub and the shield member providing an engagement therebetween, thus permitting removal of the packaging cover and preventing the drive member from biasing the hub and the shield member axially away from each other until activation is desired.

摘要： A mechanical separator (40) for separating a fluid sample into first and second phases within a collection container (82) is disclosed. The mechanical separator may have a separator body having a through-hole (46) defined therein, with the through-hole adapted for allowing fluid to pass therethrough. The separator body includes a float (42), having a first density, and a ballast (44), having a second density greater than the first density. A portion of the float is connected to a portion of the ballast. In certain configurations, the separator body also includes an extended tab band disposed about an outer surface of the float. The separator body may also include an engagement band circumferentially disposed about at least a portion of the separator body. The separator can be used for example for the separation of blood components.
