The pre-emergence action of the 3-{[(6-chloro-1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)methyl]sulfonyl}-5,5-dimethyl-4,5-dihydroisoxazole (A)/mefenpyr-diethyl (B) combination against monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous weed was determined. Seeds or rhizome pieces of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous weed plants (e.g. Sinapis alba) were placed in sandy loam soil in cardboard pots and covered with soil. The active compounds (A) and (B), formulated in the form of wettable powders or emulsion concentrates, were then applied to the surface of the covering soil in various dosages as aqueous suspensions or emulsions using a water application rate of 300 - 800 l/hectare. After the treatment, the pots were placed in a greenhouse and kept under good growth conditions for the weeds. Optical scoring of the damage to the plants or emerged plants was carried out after emergence of the test plants after a trial period of 3 - 4 weeks, in comparison to untreated controls. The tested (A)/(B) combination have good herbicidal pre-emergence activity against a broad spectrum of weed grasses and broad-leaved weeds at an application rate of = 500 gm of 3-{[(6-chloro-1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)methyl]sulfonyl}-5,5-dimethyl-4,5-dihydroisoxazole (A) per hectare.
