    • 1413539 Preparation of SO 3 and H 2 SO 4 BAYER AG 28 Nov 1972 [2 Dec 1971] 54969/72 Heading C1A SO 3 and/or H 2 SO 4 are produced by mixing 5-40% by weight of the total S required from sulphur reserve 2 with 0À5 to 1À0 times its molar amount of SO 3 from oleum tower 7 through conduit 8, recycling at 50‹ to 100‹ C., burning S in primary combustion chamber 1 without external cooling at a temperature of 1500‹ to 2000‹ C. with at most the amount of commercial O 2 required for complete combustion to SO 2 from oxygen supply 4 and cooling the combustion gases to 800‹ to 1000‹ C. in secondary combustion chamber 9. Then the remaining 95 to 60% S is mixed with the cooled combustion gases and with sufficient commercial O 2 for stoichiometric combustion to SO 2 and burning at 1700‹ to 2500‹ C. The resulting SO 2 is added to sufficient commercial O 2 for stoichiometric combustion to SO 3 in batches to separate contact catalyst layers 18 arranged in series in contact system 16 so that the molar ratio of O 2 to SO 2 diminishes from one contact layer 18 to the next from 5À5 : 1 to 1À5 ; 1 before the first layer 18 to 0À5 : 1 after the final SO 2 addition, 5 to 20% by volume of SO 3 based on the total gas reaching the first contact layer being added to the gas mixture before the first contact layer, the temperature in the contact layers preferably being from 600‹ to 620‹ C., recovering the resulting SO 3 and optionally condensing it in condenser 27 or absorbing it in oleum or H 2 SO 4 , in absorption stage 28. As shown, cooling between contact layers is carried out in heatexchangers 25. To prevent condensation of S vapour at the entrance to the secondary combustion stage the maximum amount of S vapour present is 180 g./Nm. 3 at a wall temperature of 250‹ C. and 450 g./Nm. 3 at a wall temperature of 280‹ C.
