      WHEREIN A is hydrogen or a methyl group, X is halogen or a methyl group, Ar1 is a bivalent aromatic radical which may or may not contain substitutents on the nucleus, Ar2 is a monovalent aromatic radical which may or may not be substituted on the nucleus or it may be the same as Ar1 but having an -OH group attached to one of the arylene valences; m is 0 or 1; n is 0 or 1; o is 0, 1 or 2; p is an integer of from about 5 to about 100; q is 1 or 2; r is an integer of from about 5 to about 1,000; g is a number of from about 5 to about 200; R'' is hydrogen or a methyl group; R is hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, ayrl, a carboxylic acid or a ester group of a monohydric alcohol, the amide or nitrile group, an ester group of a monocarboxylic acid or an alkoxy group, are the subjects of this application.

Thermoplastically deformable synthetic resins containing phenolic urethane groups are made by reacting (A) one or more copolymers that have been prepared from vinyl or vinylidene monomers and which contain either (a) phenolic hydroxyl or (b) isocyanate groups with (B) (a) monomeric polyisocyanates or copolymers which have been prepared from vinyl or vinylidene monomers and contain isocyanate groups or (b) polyphenols respectively. In the examples: (1) a copolymer of styrene and pisopropenylphenol was cross-linked with 2,4- toluylene diisocyanate; (2) as (1) but the copolymer also contained acrylonitrile; (3) a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile and p-isopropenylphenol was cross-linked with 1,6 - hexamethylenediisocyanate; (4) a copolymer of styrene, ethyl acrylate and #- isocyanatoethyl methacrylate was cross-linked with 2,2 - (4,41 - dihydroxydiphenyl) - propane; and (5) a copolymer of ethyl methacrylate and p - isopropenyl - phenylisocyanate was crosslinked with 1,1 - (4,4 1 - dihydroxydiphenyl)- cyclohexane. The copolymers were prepared in the examples by polymerizing the monomers in (1) toluene with azodiisobutyronitrile, (2) and (3) an aq. solution of sodium lauryl sulphate with potassium persulphate and sodium pyrosulphite, and (4) and (5) xylene with azodiisobutyronitrile respectively.
