Injection moulding apparatus for making shoe soles in two layers comprises a plurality of moulding units 20 each including a sole mould 90, a movable last 40 and movable side moulds 60, the last, sole mould and side moulds together defining the moulding cavity, the sole mould being movable from a first position defining a first moulding cavity to a second position defining a second moulding cavity, and first and second injection units 111 which are stationary relative to the moulding units, the latter being mounted on a rotatable table top 4 so that they are brought into communication first with the first injection unit which injects a first moulding material into the first mould cavity and then the second injection unit where a second material is injected into the second cavity. In this way shoe soles having two layers of different colour, physical properties or chemical composition may be obtained. A cooling plate 115 is provided for cooling the sole mould after the first injection so that the material solidifies in the injection canal and ports provided in the sole mould 90 and can be removed during the travel of the moulding unit from the first to the second injection unit. The material solidified in the canal and ports after the first and the second injections may be removed automatically. A toe cap mould 98 may also be provided.

Apparatus for moulding shoes or parts thereof includes a mould 30a, (30b) having a cavity 31 closed by a selected one of a plurality of interchangeable closure members which are rotatable in unison for alignment with the cavity. In the example shown, a two-layer sole is injection moulded on to a shoe upper 32 using, in turn, a pair of closure members 33, 34. The closure members are mounted on arms 35 on a rotary shaft 37 projecting from a control box 38 which is movable vertically to open and close the mould cavity. A plurality of moulds (22), Fig. 1 (not shown), may be mounted on a turntable (20), and injection heads (24, 26) inject materials of different colours or compositions. Modifications.-Injection may be effected through a part of the mould other than the closure members. The closure members may be mounted on a carrier in the form of a cone or a flat disc. The mould may be moved away from the closure members instead of vice versa. The apparatus may be used for injection moulding soles and heels as separate integers for subsequent attachment to pre-formed uppers, or for moulding complete articles of footwear with uppers and soles of different materials.
