    • The invention relates to fine-particle, cationic polymer dispersions that can be obtained by emulsion polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated mon omers in an aqueous solution of a cationic pre-polymer as a dispersant. Firs t, a cationic pre-polymer is produced by the polymerisation of: a) between 1 0 and 45 wt. % of at least one (meth)acrylic acid ester comprising an amino group and/or a quarternary ammonium group, and/or a (meth)acrylic amide, car rying an amino group and/or a quaternary ammonium group, b) between 40 and 8 5 wt. % of at least one optionally substituted styrol, c) between 0 and 20 w t. % of acrylic nitrile or methacrylic nitrile, d) between 1 and 15 wt. % of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydride, and e) between 0 and 20 wt. % of at l east one non-ionic, ethylenically unsaturated monomer different from the mon omers (b) and (c), the sum of (a) + (b) + (c) + (d) + (e) amounting to 100 w t. %, in a solution polymerisation in an organic solvent that can be mixed w ith water. The solution of the pre-polymer produced in this way is diluted w ith water, and then an emulsion polymerisation of a monomer mixture of: i) b etween 30 and 80 wt. % of acrylic nitrile and/or methacrylic nitrile, ii) be tween 5 and 50 wt. % of at least one C1 to C4 alkyl acrylate or at least one C1 to C4 alkyl methacrylate, iii) between 5 and 50 wt. % of at least one C6 to C14 alkyl acrylate or at least one C6 to C14 alkyl methacrylate, and iv) between 0 and 20 wt. % of a non-ionic monomer diferent from the monomers (i ), (ii) und (iii), the sum of (i) + (ii) + (iii) + (iv) amounting to 100 wt. %, is carried out in the aqueous solution of the pre-polymer, in the presen ce of water-soluble polymerisation inhibitors. The invention also relates to the use of the fine-particle cationic polymer dispersions obtained in this way as materials and surface sizing agents for paper, paperboard and cardboa rd.

    • Finely divided, starch-containing polymer dispersions which are obtainable by free radical emulsion copolymerization of (a) from 25 to 50% by weight of at least one optionally substituted styrene, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile, (b) from 1 to 49% by weight of at least one C1-C4-alkyl acrylate and/or one C2-C4-alkyl methacrylate, (c) from 1 to 49% by weight of at least one C5-C22-alkyl acrylate and/or one C5-C22-alkyl methacrylate and (d) from 0 to 10% by weight of at least one other ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable monomer and (e) from 15 to 40% by weight of a degradable starch which has a molar mass Mw of from 1000 to 65 000 the sum (a)+(b)+(c)+(d)+(e) being 100% and being based on the total solids content, in the presence of redox initiators and at least 0.01% by weight, based on the monomers used, of at least one polymerization regulator, processes for the preparation of the finely divided, starch-containing polymer dispersions by emulsion polymerization of the monomers (a), (b), (c) and (d) with redox initiators in the presence of (e) degraded starch and at least 0.01% by weight, based on the monomers used, of at least one polymerization regulator, and use of the finely divided, starch-containing polymer dispersions as sizes for paper, board and cardboard.
