    • A directional radio frequency band and optical frequency band antenna 600, comprises: a plurality of radio frequency (RF) units 604 arranged on a substrate to provide a phased array and an array of optical units 602 interspersed amongst the RF units 604. An array 520 of optical lens devices 522 is supported over the substrate such that they correspond to the optical units 602 to focus and collimate signals. The lens devices 522 transmit RF signals and optical signals along an optical axis within an angular scan range of the RF phased array. At least one optical unit 602 within the array of optical units may be a multiple-parallel-fibre optical unit terminating in a plane substantially normal to the optical axis of the antenna 600. The optical units 602 may each have a respective phase shifter and may be controlled to operate as a phased array for transmitting or receiving signals. The RF units 604 may be a patch, dipole or Vivaldi-type antenna array structure. The array of lens devices may be positioned by an actuator system to affect a beams steering operation. The antenna may provide a compact and effective common aperture antenna arrangement.
