    • A wireless communication device, known as a mobile station (MS), contains a conventional wireless communication system and further comprises a wireless computer network communication subsystem and may also include GPS capability. The operator of the MS may utilize any or all of these subsystems to determine the current position of the MS. Based on the current position of the MS, location-based services are provided to the MS as sales information, schedules, prices, maps, and the like. In a typical implementation a plurality of computer network access points, or beacons, are distributed throughout a geographic region and used to determine the position of the MS with a reasonably high degree of accuracy. Based on the current position of the MS, the beacons can provide location-based services.

    • A wireless telephone (302) digitizes the voice of the user in response to the depression of a push-to-talk button (110), either physical or virtual. It sends the digitized voice, in data mode, to a base station (308). The base station places the data, through the Internet, or an Intranet or Extranet, on a server (312). Other wireless phones (304)-(306) recover the data from the server through the same (308) or different (310) base station, through the Internet, Intranet, or Extranet, and convert the data back to digitized voice. The base stations transmit the digitized voice to other wireless telephones (306), which convert them back to voice in response to the recognition of voice frames on the data channel by the CODEC manager software. Networked computers (314) may be configured to emulate a combined base station and wireless telephone. The server can dynamically designate any wireless telephone (or landline emulation) as the broadcaster, and can dynamically configure any set of telephones/emulations as the receivers of the broadcast.

    • A system and method for aiding emergency service providers in locating an incapacitated individual by use of a wireless communications device. The invention has two major modes of operation based upon whether the line of communication between the handset and call destination is open or closed. If the connection between the handset and the call destination is open, the audible beacon periodically generates a preselected tone through the built-in speaker of the telephone. The audible beacon may be initiated from the call destination location, after there has been an established link between the telephone and the call destination, whether the connection is open or closed. Once the audible beacon is initiated, the stored volume settings of the handset are replaced by the volume settings of the audible beacon system and the preselected tone of a telephone ringer or a beep. The tone remains activated until manually turned off.

    • A mobile station determines an approximate latitude using a measured feature of the Earth's magnetic field. An approximate longitude may also be determined. The mobile station uses the approximate latitude and longitude, if determined, to assist in determining a position fix for the mobile station, e.g., by determining a list of visible satellites in a satellite positioning system (SPS) during search and acquisition of satellite signals and/or using the approximate position as a seed position in the position computation. The feature of the Earth's magnetic field may be, e.g., inclination or vertical intensity, and may be determined using data from a three-dimensional magnetometer and a three-dimensional accelerometer. An instantaneous value of the magnetic field feature may be averaged to reduce the affects of motion and the presences of large metallic masses.
