    • A method and associated equipment for use by a first entity (17) of a radio access network (101), such as a node B, in communicating with a UE (18) so as to control an uplink rate used by the UE (18) in communicating with the first entity (17), the method characterized by: a step in which the first entity (17) transmits to the UE (18) a rate control signal (RA) conveying information regarding the uplink rate.     • The invention provides a method and apparatus for providing signaling in a communication link to a sending node and a receiving node using the hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) protocol. The invention is characterized by the fact that the signalling contains a predetermined bit pattern that indicates whether control information in the current transmission can be used alone for decoding, or whether some part of the control information from an earlier transmission must also be used. The basic idea is to inform only with one bit (‘TFCI flag’), whether the TFCI bits can be used for decoding the transport channel, using HARQ. If this bit is logical “1”, then it means that current TFCI can be used for decoding, i.e. that the number of information bits for this transport format equals the number that is defined also originally when TFCI has been defined. Alternatively, if this one bit is logical “0”, then it means that the receiving side has to assume the same number of information bits for this transport format as in the original transmission. Thus the number of information bits cannot be taken from the TFCI, when doing the decoding. Thus, typically, in the original transmission, the bit is logical “1”, in the retransmissions the bit is either logical “0” or “1”.

    • To handover a mobile terminal from a serving base station BTS to a target BTS, a radio network controller RNC: 1) informs the mobile terminal of the pending handover so it can preconfigure to communicate with the target BTS; 2) indicates to the serving BTS which will be the last data packet prior to handover; and 3) informs the target BTS of the pending handover and the mobile terminal's identity. The serving BTS indicates which is the last data packet and sends it to the mobile terminal. Upon receiving an acknowledgement, the serving BTS informs the RNC. The BTS automatically switches to the target BTS after receiving the last data packet from the serving BTS, informs the target BTS that it is ready to receive data from it by a handover confirmation message, and the target 1) schedules the mobile terminal to receive data; and 2) informs the RNC that the mobile terminal is handed over.

    • Format of a downlink control channel for a user equipment UE is changed in conjunction with switching the UE between being enabled for cross carrier scheduling and being disabled for cross carrier scheduling. The changed format is used on at least one serving cell of the UE's configured set of component carriers CCs. In one embodiment the changed format comprises an explicit carrier indicator field CIF for the case in which the switching is from disabled to enabled; and the changed format has no explicit CIF when the switching is from enabled to disabled. In another embodiment switching from disabled to enabled comprises the UE's configured set of CCs being changed from one to multiple cells; and switching from enabled to disabled comprises the UE's configured set of CCs being changed from multiple cells to one cell. In one embodiment the changed format is implicit.

    • In a method for communication between a first station (BS1) and a second station (MS1) the first station may provide the second station with information associated with the manner how the second station should transmit towards the first station. The second station (MS1) may then transmit e.g. a response to a message from the first station (BS1) based on said information.
