    • A computer program product is provided as a network quality control system to perform an automatic validation of all the World Wide Web pages. The quality control system aims at improving the quality of the World Wide Web by promoting widely accepted uniform standards such as HTML, and further by generating web documents that are valid and compliant with the standards according to which they are published. The quality control system actively seeks malformed web pages and corrects them in conformity with their publication standards. The quality control system also automatically determines the most probable addresses of the persons in charge of maintaining the non-conformant web documents using a probabilistic approach, notifies these persons of the non-conformity of their documents, and forwards the corrected web documents to their attention.

    • A method of determining well-formed web pages which are authorities on a given topic utilizing link analysis. A root set of pages is first obtained by taking a given number of the highest ranked pages returned form a textual based searching and ranking system. Each page within the set is evaluated and given a structure score which reflects how well-formed the page is. The structure score is determined by evaluating each page within the set according to a set of parameters which relate to well-formed pages. For each parameter, the page is assigned a parameter score. These parameter scores are then weighted and summed to obtain the pages structure score. Each page within the set also has corresponding hub and authority weights which are updated and maintained to determine the strongest authorities. The initial hub and authority weights of a each page are set to the corresponding structure score of the page. An iterative algorithm is then utilized to determine the strongest authorities. For each round of the algorithm, the authority weights of a page are updated by summing the hub weights of each page pointing to the page, while the hub weights of a page are updated by summing the authority weights of each page which is pointed to by the page whose hub weight is being determined. After a series of iterations, the pages having the highest authority weights are identified as the strongest authorities, with the best structure, on the query topic.

    • The ranking manager and associated method of the present invention rank the authority of XML documents and their corresponding schemas using an iterative process over a set of hyperlinked XML documents and their schemas. The ranking manager introduces the notion of authoritative schemas and document structure, and maintains an authority score for each document in the set, a hub score for each document in the set, and an authority score for each schema that is used by one or more documents in the set. The ranking manager initializes these scores according to predefined criteria, and then recomputes in successive iterations: (1) the authority scores for each schema based on the hub scores of the documents that use the schema and the authority scores of the documents that use the schema, (2) the authority scores for each document based on the authority score for the schema that it uses and the hub scores of the documents that point to it, and/or (3) the hub scores for each document in the set based on the authority score for the schema that it uses and the authority scores of the documents that it points to. The ranking manager performs these computations until convergence or a threshold value of difference is reached.

    • A method and a system for providing recommendations based on branding are disclosed. For example, a brand preference corresponding to a first brand and a first category may be identified based on user activity. A recommendation is provided to the user based on the brand preference. The recommendation may be provided based on a predetermined brand relationship comprising the first brand associated with the first category, a second brand associated with a second category, and a recommendation score between the first and second categories and brands. The recommendation may provided by accessing a relationships database to determine at least one brand relationship of the brand relationships corresponding to the brand preference.
