    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a unit including a cellulose pulp continuous digester and making the best use of a vapor phase digester with a gas-filled zone on the liquid level while having the advantages inherent in a full-liquid type digester. SOLUTION: The unit works as follows. A slurry comprising chips and a cooking liquor is introduced via a baffle plate type top separator 132 into the overhead of the digester. A liquid level 104 is established on the top separator 132. A liquid is extracted from at least one port 134 of the top separator 132 and substantially all of the free liquid is extracted from the chopped cellulose fiber material slurry introduced, thus kraft pulp is extracted at a rate of at least 1,000 ton a day via the proximity of the bottom of the digester. In the above process, the liquid extraction from the top separator 132 is carried out countercurrently with respect to the chopped cellulose fiber material close to the top separator.

    • A cellulose pulp continuous digester (e.g. for producing kraft pulp) is operated so that it has the advantages of a hydraulic digester yet has a gas-filled zone over the liquid level. A slurry of chips and cooking liquor is introduced into the top of the digester vessel through an inverted top separator. A liquid level is established below the inverted top separator, a nd a chips level is established below the inverted top separator (above or below the liquid level). A gas-filled zone above the liquid level includes compressed gas, and is at a temperature of less than 160 (preferably less than 120).degree.C and at a pressure of between 50-200 (preferably 80-150) psig. The digester may have a first diameter portion (about 3-5 meters) at the top and a second diameter portion (at least about seven meters) below the top, with the inverted separator in the first diameter portion, the liquid level in the first diameter portion, and the chips level in the second diameter portion. A shoulder is provided between the first and second diameter portions and a withdrawal screen is preferably mounted just below the shoulder in the second diameter portion. A plurality of different liquor flows may be extracted from the inverted top separator.

    • The strength properties of chemical cellulose pulp (particularly kraft pulp) are improved by substituting a cold impregnation soak for conventional impregnation procedures. After steaming, wood chips are soaked in an alkaline liquid at a temperature of about 80-110° C. (preferably 80-100° C., or alternatively 90-105° C.) for between one-half-72 hours (typically about 2-4 hours) at a pressure of about 0-15 bar (preferably about 1-5 bar), to dissolve at least about 8% of the wood (preferably about 10-20%) and at least about 15% of the lignin. The alkaline liquid used preferably contains sulfide (e.g. black liquor, green liquor, white liquor, or mixtures thereof), but almost any alkaline liquid having an alkali concentration of about 1.0 mole of NaOH/liter or less (typically about 0.75 m/l or less) is suitable. The wood chips are then raised to a cooking temperature of about 145-180° C. and cooked to produce the cellulose chemical pulp. There may be an intermediate step, between soaking and raising the cooking temperature, of heating the wood chips to a temperature of about 110-150° C. (preferably about 120-140° C.) for about 10-90 minutes (preferably about 10-30 minutes). Alternatively or additionally the majority of the dissolved lignin (and/or other solids) may be removed before raising the wood chips to cooking temperature. The system for treating the wood chips need only include a low pressure soaking vessel (with an associated pump or other transfer device) in addition to conventional equipment.
