    • A rotor (10) for a centrifugal separator (12) for circulated engine lubricant formed by end walls (44, 46) and radially outer and inner side walls (42, 52) that define a separation and containment region (82). Wall (52) is defined by a tubular tension member (50) that surrounds a rotation axis (30) and extends between and through the end walls to keep them in position. Mounted within first and second ends (72, 74) of the tubular tension member are respective first and second end closure plugs (86, 88). Plug (88) has a passage (90) to admit liquid into the tubular member, but otherwise each plug is seated to inhibit passage of liquid from the member end. Each plug comprises a body seated by interference fit and an integral axially extending component (86′, 88′) that forms a mounting pin for mounting the rotor within bearing parts (24, 28) of the housing. Closure plugs may be assembled from separate plug body and fixed or rotatable mounting pin components and may extend along the tubular member and be coupled to each other, or be formed integrally as a unitary body, or share a common mounting pin that extends between discrete plug bodies.

    • A centrifugal separation rotor (130, FIG. 1), for apparatus (110) that removes contaminants from a pumped liquid such as engine lubricant by rotating it about axis (124) at high speed, comprises a separation and containment vessel (132) having impervious side wall (134) spaced from the rotation axis and at least one end wall (138) open at (142) permit liquid to leave the vessel as fast as it can enter, so that a zone (140) is defined adjacent side wall (134) that holds a volume of liquid much less than the whole volume encompassed by the vessel walls and filled in conventional high speed separators. Lower inertia and reduced pressure gradients in the liquid permits it to be spaced further from the axis than is conventional, with improved separation efficiency. Liquid is supplied to an inlet region (151) defined by a tapered divider wall (152) surrounding the axis, one smaller diameter end (1521) receiving liquid to be cleaned at the other, larger diameter end (1522) forming one or more transfer passages (156) from which the liquid is flung centrifugally to the separation zone (140). The divider wall surface (162) is interrupted by a set of upstanding vanes (181i) which extend along it and around the axle as a helix of such pitch as to form both collector vanes to guide liquid entering between the rotating vanes towards the transfer passage and motor vanes to receive one or more jets of liquid impinging thereon at a glancing angle to drive the rotor before being guided along the inlet zone.

The rotor comprises an open-type vessel (42), which in operation is only partially filled with liquid as an annular layer whose radial thickness is determined by outlet passages (721 etc). The rotor is formed from a cap (62), an annular cup-like component (60) with a tubular wall (50) that in use surrounds a spindle and defines an inlet region (66) for pressurized liquid, and a drive member (84) having nozzles (88). The cap and cup-like component are individually molded from synthetic resin and joined to form a vessel (40). Inlet region (66) is connected to the cup by transfer passage (70). The base of the cup is molded with integral outlet passages (721) and a recess (92) for receiving drive member (84), which defines a conduit directing pressurized liquid from the central region (66) to nozzles (88).
